    • An applicator head is positioned beneath a backing roll over which a substrate can be drawn. The applicator head has a housing which contains a pond of coating material between an up machine overflow lip and a down machine extraction plate or premetering plate. Coating material at a relatively low velocity flows into the pond adjacent to the overflow lip. The premetering plate extends radially from the coating inlet to a position proximate to and converging with the backing roll, where it premeters the amount of coating applied to the substrate. The premetering plate preferably has a plurality of holes through which coating and air are drawn. A metering element is spaced downstream of the premetering plate, and a low pressure area is constructed therebetween. Air and coating are drawn from the low pressure area through a valve, and the pressure thereby controlled.

    • A method of and apparatus for applying coating liquid to a web of paper traveling over a web supporting surface at speeds of 3,000, 4,000 and more feet per minute to produce a coated web free of streaking and other imperfections comprises apparatus for and the sequential steps of distributing coating liquid in a turbulent state over the supported web through a limited application zone within a very short dwell time of the turbulent liquid on the web; subjecting the coating liquid on the supported web to an initial doctoring by means of a primary doctor blade biased under pressure against the coated web at the rear edge of the application zone to form on the web downstream from the zone a relatively quiescent layer of coating liquid having a wet film thickness sufficiently in excess of the final wet film thickness to accommodate a subsequent final wet film doctoring of the coating liquid on the web; and, at a location downstream and isolated from the application zone, subjecting the relatively quiescent layer of excess coating liquid on the supported web to a final doctoring by means of a final doctor blade biased under pressure against the coated web to remove the excess coating from the web and to level and smooth the coating retained on the web to final wet film thickness and smoothness. The method and apparatus of the present invention produces essentially a constant paper smoothness in relation to web speed at which it was coated and subsequently supercalandered, i.e., smoothness does not decrease at higher web speeds, and produces higher gloss with less decline in gloss at higher web speeds.

    • A device for coating a material web includes a rotatable applicator roll having a surface for collecting a film of a coating composition thereon. The roll has a length defined by first and second ends thereof and a middle region disposed between the first and second ends. The device also includes a blade having an edge. The blade is attached to a blade holder and extends along the length of the applicator roll. The blade and the applicator roll surface form an acute angle and define a coating composition sump. The blade edge and the applicator roll surface define an inlet gap. A doctor element attached to a doctor element holder is disposed downstream of the blade with respect to a direction of rotation of the applicator roll. The blade, the blade holder, the doctor element, and the doctor element holder define, at least in part, an application chamber. At least one of the elements defining the application chamber has bores or other openings for regulating coating composition thickness on the applicator roll.

    • A short dwell coater apparatus is disclosed for coating a web with a coating material, the web moving contiguously with a rotating backing roll. The apparatus includes a housing which is disposed on the opposite side of the web relative to the backing roll. The housing defines a chamber is connected to a pressurized source of coating material. The chamber is exposed to the web such that the web supported by the backing roll is coated with the coating material during passage of the web past the coating chamber. Each of a first and second weir extend in a cross-machine direction such that the coating chamber is bounded by the weirs and the web moving between the weirs. The first and second weirs define respectively first and second overflow gaps. The arrangement is such that during use of the apparatus, when the web moves past the coating chamber, coating material is coated onto the web while excess coating material overflows through the first and second gaps for recirculating through the coating chamber. A resilient blade is disposed downstream relative to the second weir. The blade cooperates with the coating material coated onto the web such that the pressure exerted by the coating material on the blade is less than the pressure of the coating material within the coating chamber, so that mottling and streaking of the resultant web is inhibited while maintaining minimum pressure on the blade.
