摘要： A method and apparatus for sewing cover halves together around a baseball core or the like. The method includes the steps of advancing first and second needles in one direction over an edge of a first cover half and under and through an edge of an adjacent second cover half. The needles carry first and second double threads through the second cover half. The ball cover is then indexed forward and the first and second needles are advanced in an opposite direction over the edge of the second cover half and under and through the edge of the first cover half for carrying the first and second threads over the edge of the second cover half and through the edge of the first. Prior to the second step of advancing, the second thread is positioned between the first and second needles and above the first needle so that a regular herringbone stitch pattern between the first and second cover halves is achieved as the steps are sequentially repeated. The apparatus includes first and second needles and means for shuttling the needles in parallel, and abreast, back and forth over and under and through opposing cover halves. During every other shuttle motion a tab holds the second thread between the needles and raised the thread above the first needle so as to create a regular herringbone stitch pattern between the first and second cover halves.

Although the restriction structure may be seamless, the restriction structure may also include at most one seam or multiple seams that joins edges of the textile element. In addition, the seamless portion of the textile element may cover at least thirty percent or more of the surface of the bladder.

摘要： A method is provided for hand stitching a multi-panel sports ball. The method includes moving the free ends of opposed gripping arms of a panel gripping assembly into an open position; positioning a pair of panels to be stitched to form a multi-panel sports ball between the free ends, with edges of the panels and holes formed along the edges being in position for stitching; allowing the free ends to move from the open position to a closed position; forming a first stitch in the panels by passing a stitching fiber through a first set of aligned holes in the panels; engaging opposite ends of the stitching fiber in first and second gripping members disposed at opposite sides of said gripping arms; tightening the first stitch by actuating a pneumatic cylinder associated with the first and second gripping members to move the first and second gripping members relatively apart; removing the opposite ends of the stitching fiber from the first and second gripping members; and, repeating the stitch-forming and stitch-tightening steps to form subsequent stitches, until stitching along the edge is completed.
