    • A fabric is produced in a stitch-through type machine such as a Malimo maching using the apparatus and method of the invention which has at least two warp yarn design elements laid on a flexible substrate (e.g., a layer of textile filling elements) along rectilinear or non-rectilinear paths and on which a plurality of adjacent design elements are twisted (e.g., symmetrically at 180.degree. per twist) in an aesthetically pleasing configuration at spaced intervals along the warp direction. The design elements are bound to the substrate by knitting thread which forms a multiplicity of warpwise loop chains (e.g., a half-tricot stitch) to secure the substrate and design elements against relative displacement and to form thereby an integrated fabric structure. The apparatus for guiding the warp yarn design elements onto the flexible substrate in a twisted and aesthetically pleasing configuration at spaced intervals along the warp direction includes at least one shaft rotatable about its longitudinal axis to which is joined a guide bar having a number of spaced-apart warp yarn guides. The apparatus is adapted to be mounted on the machine for rotation of the shaft about its axis in synchronization with reciprocal linear movement of the shaft along said axis. In the present method of producing the fabric, a plurality of adjacent design elements are twisted at spaced time intervals by means of the herein disclosed apparatus at a location upstream from the point at which the substrate and design elements are joined by the knitting thread.

    • A patterning method and device has yarn guides for guiding pattern yarns in a warp knitting machine and divisional fall plates for knitting pattern yarns in a fall plate structure individually drive-controlled through drive devices. The device comprises any number of moveable bodies having yarn guides, the bodies being installed for movement along a row of knitting needles by the drive devices. For patterning, the moveable bodies are moved through a desired distance along the row of knitting needles so as to be positioned for patterning, thereby providing a patterning zone for pattern yarns corresponding to the number of yarn guides. Thus, it is possible to effect a free varigated patterning which is comparable with the patterning effect provided by the Jacquard control. Further, it possible to attain the knitting of a fall plate structure, in addition to the patterning by the aforesaid yarn guides, by moving any number of the moveable bodies having yarn guides and/or any number of moveable bodies having divisional fall plates by the drive devices to produce a fall plate-like action, without requiring a device of large scale.

The design element delivery mechanism includes at least one guide bar positioned substantially parallel to the row of stitch-forming elements and driven back and fourth transversely to the warp direction so that the design elements are guided back and forth past a multiplicity of the needles that form the loop chains. The design elements are bound to the substrate at some points by being pierced by the stitching thread and at other points by being embraced between the loops and laps of the stitching, the piercing or embracing being at random.
