    • A method for removing sulfur containing dust particles from particulate material exiting a material preheater in which the particulate material is heated by kiln off gases may include a number of steps. Off gases from the kiln are directed through a gas conduit to the preheater to preheat particulate material traveling through the preheater in a direction countercurrent to the direction of off gas flow through the preheater. Material exiting the preheater is directed to a material bypass conduit that is separated from the gas conduit and is flow connected to a material inlet to the kiln. A stripping gas is directed through the conduit to entrain dust particles in the preheated material and to carry said dust particles away from the preheated material.

    • The kiln operating according to the parallel-flow-regenerative process has two shafts (2, 3), which at the transition from the burning zone (14) to the cooling zone (15) have a widening forming an inner step (38) at which the combustion gases are transferred to the adjacent shaft (2, 3). This widened shaft area continues at least approximately cylindrically up to the bottom opening ( 35 ) of the shafts ( 2, 3 ) closed by a discharge device ( 34 ). This design of the shaft areas makes it possible, preferably together with an improved fuel distribution and charging device and in the case of satisfactory product quality, to burn limestone having particles in the size range 10 to 30 mm, which could hitherto not be burned in shaft kilns.

    • A process for the continuous production of a calcined product containing a high level of reactive oxide valves, from a preheated raw material containing calcium carbonate values, said process comprising,(a) introducing the preheated raw material to the bottom of a generally vertically oriented gas suspension calcining furnace, whereby said preheated raw material is thereafter suspended in an ascending stream of heated gas to thereby pass vertically upwardly through the gas suspension calcining furnace;(b) passing the ascending gas stream through a plurality of burners, into which fuel and air are injected, that are vertically spaced from each other, in the gas suspension furnace, at a number of levels in the flow direction of the heated gas, and(c) collecting the calcined product.

    • Solid materials are efficiently calcined in a single column kiln by effecting said calcination through a plurality of vertically arranged zones, by means of a method comprising the steps of feeding said solid materials to a preheating zone wherein the materials are preheated countercurrently with combustion gases, allowing said preheated materials to fall to an air preheating zone to which primary air is fed in parallel flow with said falling preheated materials, allowing said materials to fall to a calcining zone to which fuel is admitted in parallel flow with said preheated air, allowing the thus calcined materials to fall to a cooling zone to which secondary cold air is fed countercurrently with said falling materials, exhausting the combustion gases produced in the calcining zone together with said secondary air which was preheated by the calcined materials, at a point between said calcining and cooling zones, and feeding said combustion gases and secondary air as a mixture to the preheating zone. The kiln comprises a vertical elongated receptacle divided by partition means into an upper or preheating chamber and a lower chamber which includes said primary air preheating zone, said calcining zone and said cooling zone, material feed means at the top of said upper chamber, material transfer means between said upper and said lower chambers, and material discharge means at the bottom of said lower chamber.
