    • A method for aging steel-making slag comprising the steps of charging normal temperature steel-making slag crushed to the extent that the slag having a grain diameter of 25 mm or less which constitutes 80% or more of the total amount into a pressure vessel which can be closed tight enough to seal a pressure substantially higher than atmosphere. The pressure vessel is closed and pressureized steam is supplied into the said vessel for heating the said pressure vessel and slag to raise the temperature and the pressure in the said pressure vessel while discharging condensed hot water. The interior of the vessel is kept under a condition saturated by steam and pressurized up to 2 to 10 kg/cm.sup.2 G for 1 to 5 hours. The pressure in the pressure vessel is reduced to be equalized with atmosphere. The steel-making slag is then discharged from the vessel. Apparatus is provided for carrying out the above process and includes a pressure vessel having an opening lid for charging and discharging steel-making slag. A steam generating apparatus connected via a pipe having a valve to upward of the pressure vessel. A pipe having a steam trap connected at the lower position of the pressure vessel so as to discharge hot water. A pipe having a valve connected to the upper portion of the pressure vessel and open to the atmosphere so as to reduce the pressure in the interior of the pressure vessel.

    • The invention relates to a method of treating power station residues in the form of bulk material, particularly the filter ash from power stations, by hydrating the lime content by adding moisture and by further wetting of the bulk material, with an opportunity for constantly feeding in material to be processed and discharging processed material, and also to an apparatus for carrying out the method. In order to provide a method and an apparatus by which large quantities of power stations residues (ash) can be quickly and safely treated at economic and comparatively low cost, it is according to the invention proposed that the bulk material supplied should pass through a succession of different spatially substantially separate treatment zones be moved mechanically at adjustable intensity throughout the entire process, be differently treated in each treatment zone, be caused to react and transported along a reaction line under control.

    • Methods of obtaining a solution of calcium ions from lime (e.g. carbide lime) are disclosed. In one aspect the method comprises (i) treating the lime with an aqueous solution of a polyhydroxy compound (preferably sorbitol) having three or more hydroxy groups and a straight chain of 3 to 8 carbon atoms; and (ii) optionally separating insoluble impurities from the solution resulting from (i). In another aspect the method comprises (iii) treating carbide lime with an aqueous solution of a polyhydroxy compound (e.g. sorbitol or sucrose) to extract calcium from the carbide lime; and (iv) separating insoluble impurities from the solution resulting from (i). The solutions obtained may be treated with precipitating agent to obtain a solid calcium containing product. The product may be calcium carbonate obtained by treating the solution with carbon dioxide as the precipitating agent.

A pipe having a steam trap connected at the lower position of the pressure vessel so as to discharge hot water. A pipe having a valve connected to the upper portion of the pressure vessel and open to the atmosphere so as to reduce the pressure in the interior of the pressure vessel.
