    • An elevator system (20) includes wireless communicating portions (40, 42) that communicate with each other to provide elevator cab (22) position information within a hoistway (24). In one example, a first communicating portion (40) is supported on the elevator cab (22) that generates a radio frequency trigger signal (58) that is received by a second communicating portion (42) at a selected position along the hoistway (24). The second communicating portion (42) responsively generates an ultrasound signal (64) that is received by the first communicating portion (40). A characteristic of the received locating signal, such as the timing between the trigger signal and the receipt of the locating signal, provides position information regarding the cab within the hoistway.

    • An apparatus for generating function signals to an elevator controller for controlling an elevator car (1) at terminal landings in a building includes an upper cam (3) and a lower cam (4) for mounting on a wall (2a, 2b) in an elevator shaft (2) at a top landing and a bottom landing respectively, an upper switch (5) and a lower switch (8) for mounting on the elevator car and for connection to a source of electrical power (12) and an interface circuit (10) connected to the switches. The interface circuit (10) has a lower limit relay coil (16), an upper limit relay coil (27), normally closed up relay contact sets (17,19,35) and normally closed down relay contact sets (24,28,30) which cooperate with the switches (5,8) for generating upper and lower limit function signals to control car travel and upper and lower slow down signals to control car speed.

    • Elevator control apparatus for monitoring the floor position of a car utilizing a switch on the car to sense floor indicator cams each spaced along the hoistway in regular spatial relation to an associated floor. The control apparatus includes means to register signals from the floor switch while knowing the simultaneous direction of car travel to thereby enable it to distinguish ascent to a higher floor and descent to a lower floor.     • An elevator system includes a digital selector system with position indicators in the hatch to provide signals indicative of nearest floor and signals when the car is level with a floor. At initiation of a run, the nearest floor is selected as target floor, and target distance, stored as an absolute distance between floors, is retrieved. Target distance is decremented as the car moves, by signals from a pulse generator. At periodic time intervals, ideal velocity is read from an acceleration look-up table, and used, along with the actual instantaneous target distance, to calculate a slowdown profile of velocity and distance for decelerating the car to the contract deceleration rate. The calculated profile is compared with a stored deceleration look-up table to determine critical car distances for making stopping decisions. The target floor and target floor distance advance, at critical car distances, one floor at a time until a stop call is received at a target floor. The instantaneous target distance is corrected during the run responsive to receipt of actual car position signals.

    • A looped strip connected to an elevator car is moved with the car and provided with floor indication cams at intervals equal to distances between adjacent landing floors. Immediately before the car already decelerated reaches a desired one of the floors, the corresponding cam engages one of two spaced switches to operate it. This instructs the car to further decelerate and the car is stopped on the desired floor upon that corresponding cam disengaging from the operated switch with the cam located between the switches in their inoperative position.
