    • A moving strand is provided and a size is applied to the strand. A collet is rotated to wind the strand and build a package. The strand is reciprocated with a strand reciprocator to lay the strand at a wind angle on the package surface as the package rotates. A rotatable collet receives the strand to build a package. A strand reciprocator is mounted to guide the strand from edge to edge of the package and to lay the strand in a helical pattern on the package surface as the package rotates. The collet and the cam for the strand reciprocator are driven by motors. A collet inverter drive and a cam inverter drive control the rotational speed of the collet and cam, respectively. A controller is operatively connected to control the collet and cam inverter drives. A memory device such as a computer provides information to the controller of the waywind and wind angle as a function of package buildup time. An encoder can be operatively connected to each motor to provide feedback information to the controller relating to the rotational speed of the collet and the cam. The wind angle can remain constant while the relative rotational speed of the collet and the cam are varied as a function of package buildup time. Alternatively, the wind angle and the relative rotational speed of the collet and the cam can be varied as a function of package buildup time.

    • A yarn package (both conical and cylindrical) is produced at a winding station of a textile winding machine by alternately: accelerating the friction roller driving the yarn package with slippage between the friction roller and the entire surface of the yarn package; and decelerating the friction roller driving the yarn package without slippage between the friction roller and at least part of the surface of the yarn package, e.g., the neutral zone of a conical package. The periods (and thus the frequencies and angular velocities) of the friction roller and the yarn package are detected by sensors which communicate the detected values to a control and evaluation device. Based on the detected values during at least one phase of deceleration, the control and evaluation device estimates the yarn package radius during an acceleration phase. Additionally, based on detected values during the acceleration phase, and based on the known radius of the friction roller, the control and evaluation device calculates a distorted radius of the yarn package and compares the estimated radius with the distorted radius to determine a value of slippage that occurs during the acceleration phase. The winding process is then adjusted if standard values of slippage indicative of a quality yarn package are not achieved.

    • A method and apparatus for controlling a winding station of a bobbin winding machine when changing a take-up bobbin includes driving the take-up bobbin by contact with a yarn guide drum depositing a yarn, and bringing the take-up bobbin to a standstill by controlled deceleration of a rotary speed of the yarn guide drum after ascertaining that a predetermined yarn quantity has been reached, until the yarn guide drum comes to a standstill. A winding station of a bobbin winding machine includes a yarn guide drum driving a take-up bobbin by contact while depositing a traveling yarn on the take-up bobbin. A drive mechanism for the yarn guide drum has a rotary field motor. An electronic yarn cleaner monitors the traveling yarn. A measuring device detects attainment of a predetermined yarn quantity and outputs a signal. A circuit is activated by the signal for reducing a rotary field frequency of the rotary field motor down to 0 Hertz in increments.
