    • Automatic control system for a rebreather, the automatic control system comprising sensors, a microcontroller and an indicator, the microcontroller being adapted to analyse readings of the sensors and, when abnormal readings are detected, actuate a bailout, generate a safety instruction to the diver and display this instruction on the indicator. The re-breathing apparatus has a bailout system automatically activated in an emergency, where the breathing circuit is shut off, and the diver starts inhaling directly from the breathable gas supply and exaling to the environment. With the system of the invention, the diver is provided with information on the cause of this or that situation, together with clear instructions, so that the diver does not have to analyse the figures and take decision in stress situation.

    • A mouthpiece is provided having a quick connect coupler to facilitate the rapid replacement of mouthpieces for use with breathing devices that may be used by many different individuals, such as in diver training classes and rental operations. In a preferred embodiment, the mouthpiece has a coupler including a pin to engage and lock with a slot in an opening of the regulator housing. The mouthpiece can further include one-way inhalation and exhalation pathways to prevent pathogenic entities in the exhalation and saliva of the diver from contaminated the body of the regulator. An exhaust tee is provided to direct bubbles away from the diver's line of vision. The regulator housing can further include an independent exhaust valve opening. A seal is provided to prevent the regulator body from flooding through the exhaust valve opening when the regulator is used with a mouthpiece having its own exhalation pathway. A flapper valve replaces the exhaust valve opening seal to permit conventional operation when the regulator is used with a conventional mouthpiece after being taken out of service for use by multiple users.

    • A prophylactic device and associated method for preventing contamination between the mouth and a mouthpiece. The prophylactic device is a generally tubular structure, having a two open ends, that is made of a highly elastic and water impermeable material such as latex. The tubular structure is configured to conform to the contours of the mouthpiece as the mouthpiece is placed within the tubular structure. As the tubular structure is pulled over the mouthpiece, the tubular structure stretches and conforms to the mouthpiece, thus creating a watertight seal against the mouthpiece. When applied to a mouthpiece, the tubular structure covers the exterior surfaces of the mouthpiece. One end of the tubular structure is the folded into itself and is passed through the center of the mouthpiece, thereby protecting the interior surfaces of the mouthpiece. As a result, both the interior surfaces and the exterior surfaces of the mouthpiece are protected, thereby preventing all direct physical contact between the mouthpiece and a person's mouth and preventing any possibility of contamination between the mouthpiece and the mouth.
