    • A rail vehicle has a bogie which rolls on a track in a direction of travel, a vehicle structure which is supported on the bogie, a rigid carrying structure which is arranged on the end side of the rail vehicle, and an end-side coupling opening through which a coupling extends for coupling further rail vehicles. A coupling securing device secures the coupling to the rail vehicle. The coupling securing device has reversible securing elements which permit a reversible lifting movement counter to the direction of travel to such an extent that the coupling is retracted completely into the supporting structure. As a result of the retraction of the coupling into the cage-like carrying structure it no longer influences the crash behavior.

    • Lightweight yokes are provided. According to some embodiments, the basic overall appearance of the yoke may be maintained, but the actual material of which it is constructed is changed. According to other embodiments, the yoke is provided with an improved lightweight construction, and, yet other embodiments the yoke may be provided with an improved construction and formed from a preferred material. Yokes may be constructed from cast austempered ductile iron; whereas cast iron has a density, 0.26 lbs/in̂3, which is approximately 8% less than steel, 0.283 lbs/in̂3, thereby allowing for a reduction in weight over steel. A suitable austempering process is used to produce the austempered metal yoke. Yokes have improved configurations which may require less metal to produce the yoke. Both, the lightweight material and improvements in configuration of the yoke structure may combine to provide a lighter weight yoke.

    • A connection assembly including a one piece liner member for use in a connection assembly utilized in either an articulated coupling arrangement and/or a slackless drawbar arrangement for connecting together adjacently disposed ends of a pair of railway vehicles in a semi-permanent manner is provided. The one piece liner member comprises a substantially solid member having a substantially spherical inner surface for positioning around a predetermined portion of a spherical member of a connection assembly. The male connection member of the railway coupling device includes an aperture having a predetermined configuration and an inner surface formed by this aperture. A retainer member is provided for engaging at least a portion of the inner surface of the male connection member to form a substantially spherical inner surface. An outer surface of the one piece liner member engages this substantially spherical inner surface and enables movement of the male connection member in relation to a female connection member in both a vertical direction and a horizontal direction over a predetermined range of angles.

    • An improved strain sensor is disclosed utilizing a linear variable displacement transducer (LVDT) to precisely output the linear strain over a structural member. The LVDT is mounted utilizing a position apparatus having a similar coefficient of thermal expansion as the structural member, and effectively integrates the strain over the entire longitudinal dimension of the member by precisely measuring displacement under load. This assembly is readily incorporated in locomotive couplers and crane structures having a void or hollow coinciding with the neutral bending axis of the member being tested, as well as over relatively large spans, in pairs or singly, having bending moments present. A locomotive control system for increasing the strain on a locomotive coupler by monitoring the draw bar force with an associated generator speed and maximizing the draw bar force by manipulating the generator speed. A CPU interconnects the draw bar force sensor and the engine generator and makes comparisons and calculations necessary to set the generator speed in order to maximize draw bar force.

    • An emergency release mechanism for draft gear apparatus that permits the draft gear to be restored to a normal condition after an emergency release without causing damage to the unit or requiring replacement of parts therefor. The draft gear unit is provided with a plurality of toggle joints which act as solid links under normal buff loads, but which are collapsible under collision forces. Bias springs urge the toggle joints back to their normal alignment whenever the load thereon is removed by pull-apart forces between the adjacent cars.
