    • An electrically controlled fluid displacement piston positioned in a bore modulates braking pressure at a wheel brake for antilock controlled braking by modulating the position of the piston in the bore. At a fully extended home position, a check valve is unseated by the piston to hydraulically couple the brake system master cylinder to the wheel brake. To minimize the occurrences of the condition where the check valve is opened during ABS controlled braking, the piston is initialized prior to entry into antilock controlled braking at a position away from the check valve resulting in a greater volume of fluid being trapped upon entry into antilock controlled braking when a hydraulic passage in parallel with the check valve is closed in response to a detected incipient wheel lock condition. This permits the antilock brake system to apply a controlled brake pressure greater than the pressure initially trapped in the closed system. The position of the displacement piston is monitored and when the piston approaches the position at which the check valve will be opened thereby opening the fluid communication between the master cylinder and wheel brake, the antilock brake system control parameters are adjusted to increase the system sensitivity to wheel slip.

    • A solenoid-operated fluid-flow control valve comprising a single solenoid coil, the energization of which controls the movement of first and second armatures which in turn control first and second respective valve members.     • The hydraulic braking circuit between the master cylinder and the wheel cylinder is provided with a valve for interrupting fluid communication therebetween and a movable member for selectively increasing and decreasing the effective volume of a portion of the hydraulic circuit. A sensor is provided for sensing the rotation of at least one of the wheels of the vehicle and delivering an instruction signal when the wheel is subjected to an excess braking beyond a predetermined deceleration of the wheel. The signal from the sensor operates a change-over valve which increases the effective volume of the portion of the hydraulic circuit by actuating the movable member. A detector is provided for detecting maximum deceleration of the wheel during braking and the maximum value of the detected wheel deceleration is preserved in a memory. The detected maximum wheel deceleration and the rate of change of the effective volume of the hydraulic circuit are converted into effective electric signals. An orifice valve controls the rate of effective volume reduction in the hydraulic circuit in response to a comparison of the electric signals.

In a pressure reapplication mode of the antilock control, the brake liquid is supplied from the liquid chamber of the record control mechanism to the first liquid chamber, through the flow control valve.
