    • A seat belt retractor is provided with a take-up force reducing mechanism which has two spiral springs at least one of which acts for webbing take-up and in which the webbing take-up force can be reduced by controlling at least one of the two spiral springs. The retractor comprises a cam formed integrally with a take-up shaft and having a small-diametered circular cam portion, a large-diametered circular cam portion and a spiral cam portion interconnecting said circular cam portions, a follower member adapted to follow the cam portions of the cam and during webbing pay-out, to move from one of the small-diametered and the large-diametered cam portion to the other via the spiral cam portion and during webbing rewind, to move from said other cam portion to said one cam portion via the spiral cam portion, and spring force controlling means for reducing the take-up force when the follower member is following the spiral cam portion.

    • A seat belt retractor has a primary winding spring which is wound up during belt unwinding reel rotation to store energy for biasing the reel in the belt winding direction. An assist spring acts between the reel and an assist spring housing which is mounted for rotation relative both the retractor housing and the reel. A lock lever is pivotally mounted on the assist spring housing and is movable to a first position connecting the assist spring housing with the retractor housing so that the assist spring is wound up during belt unwinding reel rotation to store energy for biasing the reel in the belt winding direction and a second position connecting the assist spring housing with the reel so that the assist spring is maintained at its then existing state of wind up and has no biasing affect on the reel. A lock operating mechanism is provided which senses the extent of belt unwinding and moves the locking lever between the first and second positions in response to the extent of belt unwinding so that during belt unwinding within a predetermined range relative the limit of belt winding, the lock lever is in the first position to effect wind up of the assist spring and assist the primary spring in biasing the reel in the belt winding direction. The lock lever is moved to the second position upon belt unwinding beyond the predetermined range so that the assist spring is maintained at its then existing state of wind up with no biasing affect on the reel.

    • A reel arrangment for automatic safety belts of motor vehicles which include a roller rotatably mounted in a housing with the roller being subjected to the action of a spring in such a manner that the spring counteracts a withdrawal of the belt. A locking device is provided for locking the roller at high belt forces with a drag disk being mounted eccentrically with respect to a gear nonrotatably connected to the roller. The drag disk includes an engagement arrangement on a bearing surface thereof which cooperates with the gear in a belt take-up direction and is subject to the action of an additional spring in the belt extraction direction. A stop is provided on the reel housing for delimiting the rotational movement of the drag disk with the stop cooperating with two matching stops on the spring-loaded drag disk. The reel housing includes a curved control and guide track or surface which cooperates with a guide pin on the drag disk.

    • A safety belt retractor of a type including a pair of springs and a spring lock out mechanism enabling only one of the springs to operate when the belt is worn, in order to reduce belt tension, and to enable both of the springs to operate when the belt is released, to ensure reliable belt retraction. The retractor includes a sun and planet gear assembly including a gear ring, a planet gear and a sun gear. A shaft which rotates when the safety belt is retracted is coupled to a main spring by the sun and planet gear assembly. A stop limits orbital motion of the planet gear when the shaft is rotated, whereby the shaft is drivably coupled to the main spring through the gear assembly. A spring lock out mechanism secures the gearing against rotation, after the belt has been extracted, whereby the main springs stores its wound energy and its drive is disconnected from the shaft. An auxiliary spring, which is also coupled to the shaft, then applies a light bias to the belt. The spring lock out mechanism is released in response to orbital motion of the planet gear, when driven by the shaft, after releasing the belt which is retracted by the auxiliary spring.

    • The invention relates to safety belts of the wind-up type for vehicles. In these safety belts the belt strap, connected to a shaft rotatably mounted in a casing and tending to be reeled up on the shaft by the action of a spiral spring member tightened by the unwinding of the strap from the shaft when the strap is pulled out and laid across the chest of the strapped user, exerts an often unpleasant pressure on the chest of said user. The invention provides a means adapted to counterbalance this pressure when the strap approaches and is kept in the position of use across the chest of the user, but not to interfere with the retractive or reeling-up force exerted by the spiral spring member on the strap in positions outside said position of use.
