    • A seat belt system (10) includes a lap belt (60) including a first portion (74) and a second portion (85). A retractor (76) includes a spool (96) rotatable about an axis (160). The first and second lap belt portions (74, 85) are secured to the spool (96). The spool (96) is biased to rotate in a first rotational direction to wind the first and second portions (74, 85) onto the spool. The first and second portions (74, 85) when tensioned urge the spool (96) to rotate in a second rotational direction opposite said first rotational direction to unwind the first and second portions from the spool. A locking mechanism (170) is actuatable to lock the spool (96) against rotation in the second rotational direction. First and second web grabbing devices (180, 182) are actuatable to clamp onto the first and second portions (74, 85) when the locking mechanism (170) is in the locked condition.

The roller (32) includes a spool (50) and a pair of axially opposite spindle structures (52) centered on an axis of rotation (53). A rotatable outer surface (54) of the spool (50) is configured to engage seat belt webbing (16). The support structure (62, 62) is configured to support the roller (32) in an ordinary operating position in which the outer surface (54) of the spool (50) is spaced radially from a braking surface (82) on the brake structure (80). The support structure (62, 62) is further configured to support the roller (32) for movement under the influence of tension in the seat belt webbing (16). Such movement of the roller (32) includes uniform movement radially from the ordinary operating position to a restrained position in which the outer surface (54) of the spool (50) engages the braking surface (82) on the brake structure (80).

    • A seat belt system (10) comprises first and second shoulder belt portions (30, 32) extensible from an upper portion (20) of the vehicle seat adjacent the shoulders of an occupant. The first and second shoulder belt portions (30, 32) are connected with the vehicle. First and second lap belt portions (74, 85) are extensible from sides (22, 24) of the vehicle seat (14) adjacent sides of the occupant (12) and partially across the lap of the occupant. A first anchor (64) connects a first end portion (62) of the first lap belt portion (74) with the vehicle adjacent one side of the occupant (12). A second anchor (68) connects a first end portion (66) of the second lap belt portion (85) with the vehicle adjacent another side of the occupant (12). The first and second shoulder belt portions (30, 32) and the first and second lap belt portions (74, 85) are interconnected adjacent a waist of the occupant (12). The first lap belt portion (74) has a second end portion (98) wound on a spool (96) of a retractor (76).

    • A safety belt system comprising a belt displacer for a belt which is so constructed as to transport a section of the safety belt between a retracted position and a seizing position for purposes of facilitating fastening of the belt, is provided for its use with a three-point safety belt, in which the belt ends are attached at the seat bearer respectively at the seat on one side of the seat and run over a belt base point and a belt shoulder point. The belt displacer includes a belt deflection element which within the area between the belt ends engages at the belt and is displaceable along the belt. In the seizing position of the belt displacer, the belt buckle to be inserted into the belt lock is arranged within the area of the belt deflection element and can therefore be easily reached. As soon as the belt buckle is inserted into the belt lock, the belt displacer travels back into the retracted position.
