摘要： A lighting system using piped light is provided for a compartment such as the cargo space of a truck. An electrically energized light source is mounted adjacent the compartment. A side-fire light pipe is optically coupled to the light source. An elongated light pipe enclosure is disposed around and supports the light pipe. The enclosure comprises an elongated mounting flange adapted to fasten the enclosure to a compartment inner surface, an elongated face panel that extends integrally from along the length of the mounting flange, and a longitudinal elongated channel that is recessed into the face panel. The channel includes parallel opposing channel edges that define a longitudinal gap in the face panel. The channel is configured to receive the light pipe in frictional engagement through the gap. The light pipe can be inserted into the channel after the enclosure has been installed and protects the light pipe from damage during such operations as cargo loading into and cargo unloading from the compartment.

摘要： In an optical transmission tube comprising a tubular cladding and a core within the cladding having a higher index of refraction than the cladding, a strip-shaped reflecting layer is longitudinally extended between the cladding and the core. Light passing through the core is reflected and scattered by the reflecting layer to emerge from the tube through an area of the outer surface of the cladding opposed to the reflecting layer. The optical transmission tube is prepared by dispersing scattering particles in a monomer solution; filling a tubular cladding with the monomer solution; resting the cladding horizontally for allowing the scattering particles to settle on a lower inner surface of the cladding; and thereafter, causing the monomer solution to polymerize and solidify within the cladding.

摘要： Illumination apparatus for use in localized illumination applications, such as an automobile dashboard. The apparatus includes a light emitting diode mounted on a metallized circuit board; a TIR lens mounted over the light emitting diode to collect light emitted from the light emitting diode and to direct the light in a single direction; and a light pipe disposed over the light emitting diode and the TIR lens. The light pipe has walls extending from the circuit board to a plane above the circuit board such that directed light from the TIR lens is channeled through the light pipe to the plane. The apparatus can also include a cover disposed in the plane over the light pipe. The cover may be integrally molded to the light pipe and have an icon configured therein, such that the icon is illuminated by the light from the light emitting diode. A lens may also be placed over the cover of the light pipe to create a focused image of the icon, thereby maximizing the light emitted by the light emitting diode at the focused image.

摘要： An illuminated control panel typically for an audio device used in an automobile. The control panel includes a front panel made of a light conducting material through which push buttons and switches extend. A light conducting diffuser extends over a substantial portion of the rear surface of the front panel. The light conducting diffuser contains a plurality of sources of light which produce a generally uniform distribution of light throughout the light conducting diffuser. The illuminated light conducting diffuser back lights the entire area of the front panel, thereby increasing the general illumination of the control panel and facilitating the location and identity of the push buttons and switches. The front panel is preferably colored to improve its general appeal and appearance. In an alternative embodiment, the control panel includes one or more trim plates that are attachable to the front panel and may be used and exchanged at the choice of the user.

An LED holder has a transverse bridge extending across the gauge and has mounting ears also secured to the face plate. The holder supports an LED in the hole adjacent the spindle for directly illuminating the pointer. The holder has legs which extend toward the circuit board and contain terminal pins coupled at one end to the board. LED leads are connected to the other end of the terminal pins. Alternatively, the terminal pins are omitted and rigid LED leads extend down the legs to directly couple to the circuit board. The pointer is illuminated with different colors in different ranges of movement by using LEDs of different colors of light emission and positioned to selectively light the pointer.

摘要： A solid state thickfilm electroluminescent lamp illuminates a pointer for viewing automotive instrument clusters during low ambient light conditions. A solid state ThFEL lamp is placed between the faceplate of a vehicle dashboard and the air core mechanism. An instrument cluster pointer is situated on the opposite side of the faceplate from the ThFEL lamp. The ThFEL lamp is donut-shaped with a hole in its center to allow the pointer to connect to the air core mechanism. The lamp has a reflectie electrode and a transparent electrode situated such that the reflective electrode directs the ThFEL light towards the pointer where it is needed and away from the air core mechanism. The pointer is designed to collect a large area of dim light, focusing that light down the pointer shaft and reflecting it to an observer viewing the instrument cluster.
