    • A suspension for, and a method for suspending, a vehicle having a body is provided. The suspension includes a first suspension assembly and a second suspension assembly. The first suspension assembly extends between a first surface contact assembly and the body, and the second suspension assembly extends between a second surface contact assembly and the body. The first and second suspension assemblies each have a transverse instant center. The first suspension assembly and the second suspension assembly are aligned so that a vertical centerline of each surface contact assembly lies within a transverse vertical plane that extends therebetween. The transverse instant center of each suspension assembly is located within the transverse vertical plane, below a roll center located within the transverse vertical plane.

    • A zero roll suspension system for a vehicle that includes a vehicle frame and a wheel assembly has an axis of rotation. The present system preferably includes first and second crossing members, each of which has a first end and a second end. One of the first and second ends of each of the first and second crossing members is adapted to be mated to a portion of the wheel assembly. The other of the first and second ends of each of the first and second crossing members is adapted to be mated to the vehicle frame. The first and second crossing members are oriented so as to cross one another in superposition along a crossing axis. The other of the first and second ends of each of the first and second crossing members is mated to the vehicle frame at a location which a vehicle centerline.

    • A final gear-reduction unit is mounted at each wheel of a motor vehicle and is pivotally connected to one end of a lower control arm so that the unit may be turned to steer the vehicle. The other end of the lower control arm is pivotally connected to the frame of the motor vehicle on the side of the vehicle opposite the side on which the wheel is mounted. This allows a considerable amount of up and down movement of the wheel relative to the frame of the vehicle. The wheel is rotatably mounted to the gear-reduction unit with the gear-reduction unit positioned above the axle of the wheel to provide greater ground clearance for the drive to the gear-reduction unit. A pair of universal joints and a length of axle shaft connected between motor-driven differential gears of the vehicle and the gear-reduction unit provides the drive to rotate the wheel. This combination of universal joints and axle shaft allows the wheel to turn to steer the vehicle and allows up and down movement of the wheel relative to the frame of the vehicle. The axle shaft is mounted in a swept-back position so that the angle at the wheel between the axle shaft and the direction of movement of the motor vehicle is less than 90.degree. when the wheel is pointed straight ahead. The swept-back axle shaft decreases the turning radius of the motor vehicle by permitting a greater permissible turn angle on the inside wheel of the vehicle.

    • The suspension system is of the independent wheel support type incorporating what is known as the twin I-beam construction which is normally applied to front wheels but may be readily applied to rear wheels. An elongate fore and aft frame carries a cross member to which the suspension members are attached. A first axle member is pivoted to an end of the cross member and extends across and beyond the frame to carry a wheel at its free end. A second axle member is pivoted to the other end of the cross member and extends across in the opposite direction close to and generally parallel to the first one. Primary spring means bear down on the axle members near their free ends to take the normal load. An upwardly convex arched leaf spring is provided to take overloads and is located generally parallel to the axle members above them and beneath the cross member. The mid-point of the spring contacts and bears up against the cross member, and each end contacts and bears down against one of the axle members adjacent to their connections to the primary spring means. The auxiliary spring does not interfere with the normal action of the primary spring means.

    • The invention provides a wheel suspension for a vehicle, wherein both a right wheel and a left wheel are carried by a linkage having a first end section and a second end section. The first end section is connected to the vehicle on the opposite side of the vehicle in relation to the respective wheel, and the second end section is likewise connected to its respective wheel. The invention is particulary significant in that the linkages are substantially U-shaped. Each linkage has two legs which are mainly parallel and extend in a substantially transverse direction of the vehicle. The free ends of the linkages constitute the first end section. The linkages also have a closed section connecting the legs. This closed section constitutes the second end section, whereby an open space is defined between the legs of each linkage. At least one leg on one of the linkages extends into the open space between the legs of the other linkage.
