    • A mobile robot configured to be widely versatile in its use. For example, the mobile robot can be configured for being used on a wide assortment of surfaces, regardless of the orientation and/or shape of the surfaces. Alternatively or in combination, the mobile robot can be configured for effective and efficient movement on the surfaces it traverses. In some cases, the mobile robot is configured with two or more component units. In some cases, the component units are configured with magnets and a control system for orientating the magnets. In some cases, one or more component couplings join the component units. In some cases, the mobile unit is configured with Mecanum wheels.

    • A deployable traction assembly comprising a studded mud flap mounted for retraction and extension on the vehicle by operation of a motor. The motor may have a shaft connected via spools and straps to the studded mud flaps. The studded mud flap may be mounted on the vehicle behind or in front of a set of wheels within a distance such that when the studded mud flap is extended and the vehicle moved backward or forward, the studded mud flap may extend under a set of wheels. The deployable traction assembly may include one or more sensors connected to sense position of the studded mud flap or load on a part of the deployable traction assembly, such as the shaft of the motor. A processor may be connected to receive signals from the one or more sensors and provide output for controlling the motor based on the received signals.

    • A vacuum intake horn is constantly secured to a portion of a land vehicle and connected to a vacuum generator to increase the load on the wheels and, thereby, enhance traction. In order to minimize the clearance between the intake horn face and road surface for greater vacuum force, the vacuum intake horn is attached to a portion of the vehicle such that movement of the vacuum intake horn relative to an associated wheel of the vehicle is no greater than 75% of the movement of the vehicle chassis relative to the wheel. The vacuum intake horn is mounted behind and substantially entirely within the outline of a tire, so that the tire protects the vacuum intake horn from debris and bumps in the road. In one embodiment, the vacuum intake horn is attached to the vehicle by a compensation arrangement that maintains the vacuum intake horn at a generally constant height close to the road surface despite tire deflection or movement of the chassis relative to the associated wheel.

    • A road surface condition changing apparatus which increases a coefficient of friction between a wheel of a vehicle and a road surface without using any consumable materials. A cylinder member is provided in front of the wheel of the vehicle. The cylinder member is rotatable about a rotational axis corresponding to a longitudinal center of the cylinder member. The cylinder member is pressed against a road surface so as to change a road surface condition while being rotated. A support mechanism supports the cylinder member so that the rotational axis of the cylinder member is parallel to the road surface and is inclined with respect to the rotational axis of the wheel. Protrusions, brushes or a water absorbing material may be provided on an outer surface of the cylinder member.

    • A container for the storage of sand, the container being of the type which may be stored in a motor vehicle such as a car or truck and which may be used to deliver sand to the wheels of a car stuck in the mud or snow. The container comprises a circular bottom and an elongated frustoconical body portion extending from the circular bottom, the body portion defining a pouring spout for pouring sand stored in the container. Because the body portion is elongated, sand can be delivered in difficult to reach places such as underneath a car. The container is preferably made out of a flexible water repellant fabric which may be folded over and affixed in the folded position to close the container during non-use. The container may also include a reflector mounted thereon to allow the use of the container as an emergency road reflector.

    • A vehicle traction-increasing apparatus for creating subambient pressure beneath the vehicle to place a load on the vehicle and increase the traction between the driving wheels of the vehicle and the road surface. The air induction system of the vehicle driving engine is connected to a housing located beneath the vehicle. The bottom portion of the housing is open and applied to the road surface. A flexible curtain is connected to the housing about its open side and is urged downwardly toward the road surface. The resiliency and configuration of the curtain is sufficient to allow only a small opening between the road surface and bottom edge of the curtain so that a significant pressure reduction must be created to flex the curtain, yet once the curtain is flexed away from the road surface, it forms a virtually friction-free bearing with the road surface and is movable across the road surface without appreciable drag.
