    • A portable alphanumeric and symbol drafting device which essentially comprises a mechanically functioning keyboard unit, which is flexibly connected to an electronics package unit. Accordingly, the keyboard unit, which preferably weighs on the order of only two pounds, comprises a singularly useful device for a draftsman, since it allows a string of characters to be most accurately applied upon a drawing surface, by manipulation of only the keyboard unit. The keyboard unit may also include an attachment for mating with a standard parallel-arm drawing device. The keyboard unit comprises a first longitudinal edge, which is used to establish an origin or base line for the string of characters to be lettered and includes a carriage means for supporting a drafting pen in a manner to allow it to be operably controlled for a longitudinal (x-axis) and transverse (y-axis) movement proximate this first longitudinal edge of the housing. The x-axis travel is approximately eight inches, and the y-axis travel is approximately one inch, and the keyboard unit is capable of accurately producing a string of alphanumeric characters, or symbols, in a sequential manner within this size envelope. The electronics package has storing memory means for holding addressable, numerical instructions for vocabulary of characters, which are addressed by receiving character input signals from the keyboard. Scale means operate upon the digitized character instructions, whereby a character symbol can be accurately drawn, (up to approximately one inch in height,) without requiring any change of the digitized instructions in the vocabulary storing memory means.

    • An automatic drafting device has a carriage with toothed wheels in meshed engagement with toothed racks extending across a planar support surface. A pressure regulation device is mounted on the carriage and regulates the pressure applied to a stylus holder held by the device. The stylus holder containing a writing instrument can be lifted and lowered by a direct current motor with an eccentric disc. The writing tip of the instrument held in the stylus holder, when not in use, is supported on a soft resilient material, such as rubber, to form a seal preventing air from reaching the tip. When the writing instrument is lifted off the resilient material it is ready to write.

    • The invention concerns a drawing or engraving device which has a first trlling carriage system with a first and second guide rail each supporting a moving travelling carriage. The second guide rail is attached to the travelling carriage on the first guide rail. A second travelling carriage system is joined to the first travelling carriage system and has two travelling carriages driven by motors. One of these travelling carriages supports a working head which can be manually guided. The coordinates of the actual pattern executed by the working head are determined by means of a distance measuring device. Computing means compare these actual coordinates with coordinates of a selected pattern through which the working head should travel to draw an element or line segment selected by the user. A control device is activated by the computer which calculates any deviation of the actual pattern coordinates from the selected pattern coordinates. The control device drives the travelling carriages of the second travelling carriage system by electric drive means to compensate for the deviation so that the hand guided working head closely follows the selected pattern.

The unused stylusses are stored in appropriate receptacles in the control unit. A keyboard can be used to select the desired marking program.
