    • A check digit numbering mechanism for generating check digits in accordance with a check digit load setting utilizes a check digit printing mechanism for printing a check digit on a printing medium including serial reference numerals. The check digit printing mechanism is indexed by a check digit numerator device. A plurality of solenoids and a corresponding plurality of movable armatures, each associated with a particular one of the solenoids, are provided such that at least one of the armatures is movable to engage the check digit numerator device to actuate it in association with the relative motion between the check digit numerator device and the solenoids. The plurality of solenoids are selectively actuated by a control mechanism which is responsive to a signal generated each time a reference number is printed on the printing medium to index the check digit numerator device to print an appropriate check digit associated with a given reference number on the printing medium. Switching circuitry changes the setting of the check digit numerator device to enable selected solenoids to receive appropriate signals in accordance with the check digit load setting.

A machine for consecutively numbering or applying letters to sheets comprises a numbering or printing cylinder 24, at least one number or printing head 25 mounted on said cylinder, an impression cylinder 23 co-operating with said numbering or printing cylinder, means for feeding sheets one at a time to said impression cylinder, cam means 26 for indexing the head 25 on each revolution of the cylinder 24, a sheet delivery device 33 for transferring numbered or printed sheets from the impression cylinder 23 to a pile 32 and including sheet-ejecting means for selectively ejecting a sheet 42 at a station different from said pile, means operable to render the cam means 26 inoperative during one revolution of the cylinder 24 whereby the same number or letter is printed on two consecutive sheets, and control means selectively operable for effecting operation of the means for rendering the cam 26 inoperative and said sheet ejecting means so that a sheet having a repeated number or letter thereon is ejected for inspection &c. Number-printing apparatus.-The cylinder 24 is made up of a plurality of axially slidable annular holders 61, each of which supports a circumferentially adjustable numbering head 25. As a cam 46 on the shaft 48 of the cylinder 24 rotates it urges a lever 50 counterclockwise and through a cam follower 52 and a bell-crank lever 53 urges the cam 26 radially inward into its operative indexing position where it is adapted to be engaged by a follower 59 connected to the operating mechanism of the head 25 by a lever 60. The cam 26 is maintained in its operative position by a latch bar 62 which engages a pin 63 on the lever 50; the cam 26 being moved to its inoperative non-indexing position on energization of a solenoid 67 which releases the pin 63. When the apparatus is not printing tripping eccentrics move a link 74 downwardly to move a bell-crank lever 70 so that spring 65 overcomes spring 66 and the latch bar 62 is moved clockwise and the pin 63 released. Even when printing the latch bar 62 may be maintained out of engagement with the pin 63 so that the cam 26 is inoperative by a locking device, Fig. 5 (not shown). Rotary apparatus.-Each sheet is fed along a board 12 and received by grippers 15 on an impression cylinder 13 which co-operates with an offset blanket cylinder 16 which itself cooperates with a plate cylinder 17 provided with a dampening unit 18 and an inking unit 19. A cylinder 21 transfers the sheet from the grippers 15 to the grippers 22 of an impression cylinder 23 having a tympan sheet thereon. The cylinder 23 presents the sheet first to the cylinder 24 carrying the numbering heads 25 which are inked by rollers 28 and then to a printing cylinder 29 inked by rollers 30, which cylinder prints the name of the depositor in the case of the sheet being a cheque. A wheel 31 perforates the cheque. The cylinders 16, 24 and 29 may be relieved of operating pressure, the cylinder 16 being tripped by eccentric means. Sheet delivery and set-off prevention.-The delivery device 33 comprises a pair of chains 35 carrying gripper assemblies 37, a cylinder 34 and a pair of sprockets 36. An upwardlydirected blast of air from tubes 43 directs the printed sheet towards and against stationary tapes. One of the five gripper assemblies 37 is provided with a cam 83 which as it travels engages limit switches 84, 85, 86 and 87. To eject a sheet the operator pushes a button and switches 84 and 85 respectively cause the energization and de-energization of the solenoid 67, the switch 88 operates a solenoid 88 to move a sheet eject cam 40 into operative position to eject a sheet 42, and the switch 89 de-energizes the solenoid 88 and prevents sheet ejection until the operator again pushes the ejection button, Fig. 3 (not shown). The sheet 42 falls into a tray or it may be caught by an experienced operator. The delivery pile 32 is located directly beneath the feed pile 10 and is provided at its side edges with jogging means to keep the sheets aligned for cutting.
