    • An apparatus for counting the number of times a temperature cycle occurs includes an indicator having sequential indicia and a temperature responsive member for indicating a next one of the indicia. Mechanical, fluid mechanical and electronic versions of the invention are disclosed. In the mechanical version, the indicator can be a ratchet member having teeth, a pawl and a display surface containing indicia. A temperature responsive element such as a bimetallic member engages the teeth of the ratchet and advances the ratchet each time the apparatus is subjected to a preset temperature cycle. A housing with a window masks the display to indicate one of the indicia as advanced by the temperature responsive element. Preferred embodiments of the mechanical version include a ring-like ratchet member with interior teeth and an exterior display surface. The number of teeth is preferably one or more less than the number of indicia so that upon advancing the ratchet member to the last indicia, it can be advanced no further. The bimetallic element is mounted inside the ring and the housing covers the outer surface of the ring. A removable locking pin is provided to prevent movement of the ratchet member until activated.

    • A rotor movement sensing system in a postage meter permits detection of the printing of postage even if power is lost during the printing cycle. A sensor senses a magnet on a disk when the rotor is substantially past its home position. A second sensor has a magnetic memory element. When the magnet on the disk passes near the memory element, that element is magnetized. A Hall-effect sensor at the memory element provides an interrupt to a processor to indicate magnetization of the memory element. A winding is provided around the memory element. The processor has an output which, when asserted, causes current flow through the winding, demagnetizing the memory element. Alternatively a reed switch senses rotor rotation, a flip-flop provides a bistable latch and its output provides a datum for the processor. An interrupt routine provides that during a routine franking cycle the processor responds to the interrupt, makes record in nonvolatile memory of the occurrence of the printing cycle, and energizes the winding or flip-flop reset. This interrupt routine is executed for each franking cycle when power is continuously available.

    • A counting circuit includes a digital counter for counting the pulses of an input signal during a counting interval and a pair of digital latches for latching the binary state of the input signal at the beginning and end of the counting interval, respectively. The latched binary states of the input signal and the pulse count of the digital counter are evaluated by an interpreter such as logic circuitry or a microprocessor. The interpreter resolves the pulse count into half clock cycles by comparing the binary states and in response adjusts the pulse count by the addition or subtraction of half a clock cycle.

    • Documents are fed from an infeed through a stripper one at a time. Documents leaving the stripper are accelerated to provide a suitable gap between documents. A light source and phototransistor are used to count the documents. The phototransistor picks up the light passing through the documents as well as light between documents. Plural counters count in a mutually exclusive fashion, said counts representing document length and gap length between documents to count the documents to distinguish between "normal" gap lengths and perforations, tears and the like within documents, to detect the presence of overlapping or abnormally "long" documents to provide an accurate count and to terminate document feeding. The counters mutually exclusively develop counts during the presence and absence of sheets, respectively.
