The detector is sensitive to detect a dunnage jam within the outlet chute, and is associated with the dunnage mechanism to cause the dunnage mechanism to stop driving the dunnage into the outlet chute when a jam is detected.

摘要： Apparatus for producing a string of interconnected packing cushions comprises a packing cushion production machine which produces a string of interconnected packing cushions, and a packing cushion handler adapted to receive the string of interconnected packing cushions from the packing cushion production machine. The handler includes a separation plate. The separation plate is configured to support the string of interconnected packing cushions against force applied to the string of interconnected packing cushions in a direction towards and generally normal to the separation plate. The separation plate includes an opening therein which extends to a downstream end edge of the separation plate. The separation plate and opening are configured such that by extending one or more fingers of a single hand towards a line of perforations connecting adjacent packing cushions in a string of interconnected packing cushions, a packer is able contact the line of perforations, tear the line of perforations from a generally central location of the line of perforations outwardly towards each end of the line of perforations, grasp the downstream packing cushion, and separate it from the upstream cushion, all with a single hand.

摘要： A packaging system 100 includes a controller 102, an input device 104 in communication with the controller 102 that identifies one or more characteristics of the container, and a manual input device 106 in communication with the controller 102 that provides multiple input options for selection by a packer. The input options represent relative degrees to which a container is filled by one or more objects to be packaged. The controller 102 provides an output signal indicating a quantity of dunnage to dispense to the container based on the selected input option and the one or more identified characteristics of the container. Once the controller receives the container characteristics information, as well as the selected input option representing the relative degree to which the container is filled by the objects to be packaged, the controller can determine the number and lengths of dunnage strips that need to be provided to fill the remaining void in the container. Once the controller 102 has determined the amount dunnage that needs to be dispensed, the controller can signal a dunnage dispenser 110 to dispense the determined amount of dunnage.

The packaging system controller provides packaging instructions related to a part or parts to be packaged and instructs the cushioning conversion machine to produce the cushioning material. In one aspect of the present invention the packaging system controller provides packaging instructions by retrieving a predetermined set of packaging instructions associated with a particular part. In another aspect of the present invention the packaging system controller provides packaging instructions by determining an optimized packaging methodology using one or more characteristics of the part or parts to be packaged. The packaging system also provides for automated inventory control and productivity monitoring.

摘要： A dunnage conversion machine (36) converts a sheet stock material into a dunnage product that is relatively thicker and less dense than the stock material, but is relatively thin and sufficiently flexible to function as a protective wrap. The conversion machine includes a feed mechanism (40) that advances a sheet stock material therethrough and a connecting mechanism (42) downstream of the feed mechanism. The connecting mechanism retards the passage of the sheet stock material therethrough by feeding the stock material therethrough at a slower rate than the feed mechanism feeds the stock material to the connecting mechanism. This causes the stock material to randomly crumple in a longitudinal space between the feed mechanism and the connecting mechanism. The connecting mechanism connects multiple overlapping layers of sheet stock material together as they pass therethrough, including connecting at least one crumpled sheet to one side of one other sheet.
