摘要： A paperboard core suitable for use in winding yarns may include strips of paperboard wrapped about an axis and secured together to form an elongate structure defining a winding surface. A coating of a polymer such as polyvinylidene chloride covers the winding surface. The coating may be applied to the strips of paperboard prior to winding and/or applied to the winding surface after winding. The coating may comprise multiple layers of the polymer, which may be cured individually. The coating may also be applied so as to create a substantially uninterrupted coating along the winding surface. One method of applying the coating is by roll-coating.

The inner surface is part of the structural ply, or it is part of a second ply of the tube. The outer surface confronts the inner surface, and the adhesive is arranged in a predetermined pattern so that only a predetermined percentage of the outer surface is substantially adhered to the inner surface (e.g., the tube is only “partially adhered”). The predetermined pattern can include three or more stripes of the adhesive, and the predetermined percentage can be substantially less than 100%. The predetermined pattern is preferably provided by apparatus for applying and/or arranging the adhesive on the ply in a predetermined pattern prior to the ply being formed into the tube.

摘要： A wound paperboard tube having enhanced burst strength in high-moisture conditions up to and including complete and prolonged submersion in liquid water comprises a plurality of paperboard plies formed from a pulp comprising papermaking furnish and an effective amount of a size such that the paperboard plies have reduced moisture add-on when submerged in water, relative to paperboard plies formed from a pulp comprising the identical furnish but without the size. The plies are wound one upon another about an axis of the tube and adhered together with a water-resistant adhesive comprising a polyvinyl composition containing a cross-linking agent for inducing cross-linking of the adhesive.

摘要： In a wound paperboard tube, adhesive is applied between two or more structural paperboard layers in a partial-coverage pattern characterized by spaced regions of adhesive interspersed with adhesive-free portions of the facing surfaces of the layers. The pattern can comprise islands of adhesive spaced apart in both circumferential and longitudinal directions of the tube, or intersecting lines of adhesive spaced apart in both circumferential and longitudinal directions and forming a grid, or the like. The tubes can be spirally wound, convolutely wound, or formed by a linear draw process. Tube strength is not substantially compromised by reducing adhesive coverage substantially below 100%, on a surface area basis.

摘要： A method of manufacturing a core, especially a spiral core, from superimposed plies of board produced by winding, gluing, and drying them, is provided. The method is practiced so that the moisture content of at least some of the board plies entering the winding stage differ from each other in order to provide a stepwise moisture structure within the core wall. This decreases unfavorable stresses which are produced in the drying stage if a core is manufactured from plies having equal moisture content.
