    • A carton feeder assembly is positioned substantially at the infeed conveyor level and includes a carton supply assembly, a carton selector, a carton opener, and a carton erector. The carton supply assembly has a carton supply position, a carton holding position, and a carton selecting position. The carton selector includes a pair of feeder wheels with corresponding suction devices and respective motion defining assemblies. The motion defining assemblies cause the suction devices to move along a linear pick line as the feeder wheels rotate, so that the suction devices can apply a suction on a carton to be selected. The selected carton is brought into contact with the feeder wheels by retraction of the suction devices caused by respective motion defining assemblies, so that the carton moves with the feeder wheels to the carton opener. The carton opener includes a vacuum belt which applies suction to one surface of the selected carton as a carton opening wheel applies a suction to a second side of the selected carton. As the vacuum belt moves the carton in a linear direction, the carton opening wheel rotates the second side of the carton so that the carton opens. The vacuum belt then feeds the opened carton into leading lugs on respective chains of the carton erector. Trailing lugs rotate into position behind the opened carton to hold the carton in an erect position suitable for loading the carton with articles such as bottles or cans.

    • A carton feed opening wheel assembly for opening carton blanks into preformed cartons on a packaging machine is disclosed. The carton feed opening wheel assembly has a pair of spaced and generally parallel endless vacuum conveyor belts moving along a path of travel from a carton magazine assembly to a carton transport conveyor, and a carton opening wheel positioned on the packaging machine with respect to the vacuum conveyor belts for engaging the top portion of an unopened carton blank being moved on the vacuum conveyor belts toward the carton transport conveyor. The carton opening wheel has at least one suction cup supported thereon for engaging the top portion of the carton blank at a speed and direction substantially the same as the speed and direction of the unopened carton blank moving on the vacuum conveyor belts. Thereafter, the speed of the suction cup in the direction of the path of travel is retarded with respect to the speed of the bottom portion of the carton blank being moved on the vacuum conveyor belt as the suction cup is simultaneously moved perpendicularly away from the vacuum conveyor belts so that the carton blank is opened, whereupon the opened carton is then passed to the carton transport conveyor.

    • An apparatus for taking folded flat blanks out of a magazine and transferring them to a conveyor apparatus of a box-making machine is disposed between the vertically oriented magazine and the conveyor apparatus extending horizontally beneath it at some distance therefrom. The apparatus has three suction cups offset by 120.degree., on a star-shaped rotor which travel over a self-contained cycloid path (C) having four reversal points (F, G, H, I) and concave arcs between them. This cycloid path is generated by a revolving crank that rotatably supports the rotor with an eccentricity (E) and by a planetary gear associated with the crank, the sun gear of which is disposed coaxially with the axis of rotation of the crank, and the planet gear of which is firmly connected coaxially to the rotor; an intermediate gear is incorporated between the sun gear and the planet gear. The gear ratio of the planetary gear is 4:3 between the sun gear and the planet gear, and the spacing (D) of the suction cups from the shaft of the rotor is approximately three times the eccentricity of the crank. For erecting the foldable blank during the transfer, pressing fingers are associated with the suction cups and are pivoted by a control disk supported on the shaft of the rotor.

For acting upon the articles, for instance pressing on a foldable box or rotating it about a transverse axis, a cam disk is rotatable supported on the shaft of the rotor and is hindered from rotating with the rotor by being coupled to a rocker arm supported in stationary fashion. A lever guided by a roller in the cam race acts upon a pivotable pressing prong or upon the rotatably supported suction cup.

The carton is partially opened by the operating station on the carousel and the conveyor assembly is positioned relative to the carousel to cause the retained partially opened carton to be fully opened upon impact with a retaining member of the conveyor assembly.

    • The carton erecting apparatus provides for the high speed transfer and opening of flat, folded cartons. The apparatus includes a rotary transfer mechanism having a fixed gear and a plurality of planetary gears in rotational communication with the fixed gear. The planetary gearing rotationally drives therewith a vacuum transport means so as to provide therefor at least two apex positions of travel at predetermined locations. A vacuum control means is operative on the transport means, particularly at its apex positions. A storage means is provided at a first apex position for releasably holding flat, folded cartons. And, a conveyor means is provided at a second apex position of travel of the vacuum transport means. The conveyor means has outwardly extending flights which are uniformly spaced and separated by a distance essentially based upon a predetermined carton dimension. The conveyor means is synchronized with the rotary transfer means so that a carton carried by the vacuum transport means slidably engages an upwardly extending flight as it approaches the second apex position of travel. The slidable engagement of the flight and carton causes the carton to open in a sleeve-like configuration. The vacuum release by the vacuum control means provides for the deposit of the opened carton between adjacent flights for transfer therewith and for subsequent packaging purposes.
