    • The machine includes a vacuum head which is mounted to rotate on the outer end of an elongated arm adapted to be pivoted upwardly and downwardly about a fixed pivot by a servo drive. As the arm pivots, the vacuum head picks either a carton blank or a tray blank out of a magazine and transfers the blank toward a conveyor. During the pivoting, the vacuum head is turned relative to the arm and, when the blank is a carton blank, the turning motion brings the blank into engagement with a fixed plow which erects the blank. During final downward movement of the arm, the vacuum head is held parallel to the conveyor and moves toward the conveyor with a vertical plunging motion. When the blank is a tray blank, such vertical plunging causes the blank to be erected by flights on the conveyor as the blank is loaded between the flights.

    • A box erector for erecting a box from a knock-down configuration into an open rectangular box is disclosed which includeds a frame (10) for an inventory section (20), a transfer section (22), a flap closure section (24), a taping section (26), and an exit section (28). A transfer arm (A) pivots to a pick-up position where a vacuum assembly (B) picks up a top box and pivots the top box to a box-opening position at approximately 79.degree. from the pick-up position. At the box-opening position, the box is rotated 45.degree. from its horizontal pick-up position, and first and second arms (78, 80) of vacuum assembly (B) open the box to a rectangular shape. Thereafter, the transfer arm moves the box to closure section (22). A drive belt (88) and drive pulleys (88a, 88b) rotate vacuum assembly (B) so that the box is vertically oriented when deposited at flap closure section (24). A pressure foot (92) extends into the box at the closure section and holds the box against the end flaps (29a) and side flaps (31a) as they are closed. The closed flaps are then moved across taping section (26) by horizontal movement of pressure foot (92). The flaps are taped closed, and the box is moved to exit section (28) where it is released upon demand from a product feed line.

    • A preferred embodiment of the invention comprises a box forming machine operable to raise folded box material to a box frame, and to fold the edges that comprise the box bottom into a bottom area and to tape the folded edges. The forming equipment is equipped with a box material supply that stores folded box stock material. The apparatus withdraws a piece of box material from the box material supply station by means of a vacuum chuck. The box stock material is raised to a box frame by means of a raise guide and further to a bottom folding station that folds the inner box edges which extend in a direction transverse to a taping direction. Outer edges are then folded into the bottom areas along the taping direction and a tape head tapes together the inner edges by means of a tape head drive.

    • A machine is provided for forming three-dimensional cardboard boxes starting from a blank folded flat. The machine has a supporting frame which includes a magazine containing many flat blanks for taking one blank at a time from the magazine. The machine is capable of opening the blank, closing the lower smaller flaps of the blank, closing the lower larger flaps, and ejecting a formed box. The lower smaller flaps are closed virtually simultaneously with the opening of the blank in such a manner so as to prevent interference by the smaller flaps with the adjacent larger flaps and thus facilitate closing of the smaller flaps. The opening mechanism rotates around pins, each located at a corner of a box to be formed. At least one of the rotation pins is adjustable in position. Retractable suction cup members make up the opening mechanism.

    • Folding elements for forming gussets in a tubular film are provided in the mutually opposite open areas between a pair of flattening plates and the plates are reciprocable in the axial direction of the tubular film for an adjustment of the depth of the gussets. The folding elements are mounted to be pivotally movable in all directions and are guided to be transversely displaceable relative to the axis of the tubular film. Adjacent to their mutually opposite, upstream ends the folding elements are provided with adjusting means for imparting a pivotal movement which is transverse to the direction in which the depth of the gussets is adjusted and/or about their longitudinal axes in dependence on a measured deviation of the outer fold lines from their desired position. Sensors are provided for detecting the location of the outer fold lines of the gussets formed in the tubular film.

    • A packaging apparatus for feeding, erecting, loading and closing cartons. The packaging apparatus comprises a generally vertically extending carton transfer mechanism for advancing cartons upwardly in step fashion from a carton infeed station adjacent the lower end of the carton transfer mechanism past a carton loading station and to a carton discharge station at the upper end of the carton transfer mechanism. A carton transfer mechanism that includes laterally spaced carton guides that are open at the front and rear sides and transfer slides that are reciprocable along the carton guides. A carton magazine supports a stack of cartons adjacent the open front side of the carton guides and a carton infeed mechanism is mounted for movement in a plane parallel to and between the guides to withdraw cartons from the end of the stack and feed the cartons with open end leading into a position between the guides. A flap folding mechanism infolds the end flaps on the cartons and holds the cartons against upward movement during upward folding of the side flaps on the ends of the carton. Adhesive is applied in a horizontal band crosswise of the path of movement of the cartons and the side flap on the upper panel of the carton is then folded downwardly to close and seal the carton.

    • A machine for erecting flat box blanks and for closing one end of the erected box comprises a feed guide dimensioned to receive a stack of flat-folded blanks, and a forming slot at an end of the feed guide, the forming slot being dimensioned to receive an erected box but consequently too small to accept a flat-folded blank. A suction head carried by a drive jack is effective to pull a box blank from the feed guide into the forming slot, with simultaneous erection of the blank to form the rectangular box, and immediately after that two folding blades converge on the box to fold-in side flaps ready for folding down an end flap of the box. The folding of the end flap is accomplished by a closing fork operating in a direction perpendicular to the plane of action of the closing blades and effective to fold over both an end panel, and a terminal tab which tucks into the box to ensure closing.
