    • A method to optimize the welding energy input into the heating coil of a heating coil fitting is disclosed. In particular, the invention pertains to a compensation method for the effects on the welding energy input from using a fundamental frequency outside the tolerance range for the AC welding voltage established for the heating coil fitting. A generator is one option to supply power to a device for the implementation of the invention-based method. It supplies an AC welding voltage to the heating coil with a fundamental frequency outside the tolerance range for the AC welding voltage as marked out for the heating coil fitting. Another option is especially the use of DC welding voltage for the heating coils of heating coil fittings. To execute the method, a welding power supply unit is connected to the contact elements of a heating coil fitting via connecting leads and connecting elements. The electrical parameters for the heating coil fitting are determined, especially the heating coil inductance of the heating coil. Based on the established effective AC welding voltage, a suitable welding voltage and welding time are then determined.

    • A method and apparatus for electrically heat welding a thermoplastic fitting having an electric resistance heating element disposed therein whereby a regulated quantity of electric power is supplied to the heating element during the welding process and the making of a high quality weld is insured. In accordance with the method, a controlled electric power is supplied to the resistance heating element of the fitting. The initial magnitude of the current flowing through the heating element is sensed and compared with predetermined current levels for various sizes of fittings whereby the size of the fitting as well as the total time the controlled electric power should be supplied to the heating element of the fitting for the making of a high quality weld are determined. The magnitude of the current flowing through the heating element over the time the controlled electric power is supplied thereto is sensed at predetermined time intervals and compared with predetermined current levels for the size of fitting being welded to thereby determine if the welding process is proceeding abnormally at such time intervals. The electric power supplied to the heating element is terminated when it is determined that the welding process is proceeding abnormally or otherwise at the end of the total time determined to be required for the making of a high quality weld.

    • A heat control system used in apparatus for packaging articles in a tray by applying a film of thermoplastic material over the articles in the tray. The apparatus includes a plurality of electrically operated heating units successively moving along a prescribed path and adapted to captivate each tray and the film over the articles in the tray between adjacent heating units as the heating units move along a prescribed portion of the prescribed path to press the film against opposite sides of the tray and heat the film to a temperature to cause the film to bond to the tray. The heat control system includes temperature control means for controlling the temperature of each of the heating units, detection means for detecting when each of the heating units is in position to press the film against the tray, and timing means connecting the temperature control means and the detection means so that the timing means is activated while the detection means detects that the heating unit is in position to press the film against the tray to cause the temperature control means to lower the temperature of the heating unit from a prescribed higher welding temperature sufficient to bond the film to the tray to a prescribed lower holding temperature to prevent deterioration of the film after a prescribed period of time and to cause the temperature control means to raise the temperature of the heating unit back to the prescribed higher welding temperature after the heating unit releases the film. The method of operating the apparatus is also disclosed.
