    • A method and apparatus for sharpening clockwise rotating standard blades, counter-clockwise rotating standard blades and mulching style blades of either clockwise or counter-clockwise rotation is provided. The present invention comprises a base with a blade fixture which is reversible to accommodate both clockwise and counter-clockwise rotating blades. Uprights, a slide shaft, a slide bushing and a handle shaft connected to a disc grinder provide a means for setting a primary cutting angle for sharpening the primary cutting edges of a blade. An adjusting wheel rotatable attached to the handle shaft and pivotably coupled to the disc grinder provide a means for quickly and easily adjusting the cutting angle in order to accommodate sharpening the secondary cutting edges of a mulching style blade and returning the disc grinder back to its original cutting angle.

    • A device and method for sharpening a mower blade are provided, in which a mounting device for mounting a rotary blade having two opposite cutting edges to be sharpened, wherein the mounting device is capable of positioning the blade in a first fixed state and a second, axially pivoting state. One or more grinding head assemblies are each positioned on an opposite end of the blade, wherein the grinding head assemblies respectively grind the two opposite cutting edges to be sharpened. A control system controls movement of the two grinding head assemblies. The mounting device positions the blade in the first fixed state to enable the two grinding head assemblies to grind the cutting edges in a direction substantially parallel to the cutting edges of the blade to perform a straight grind, and then may position the blade in the second axially pivoting state to enable the blade to pivot around its blade rotation axis away from the grinding head assemblies upon completion of the straight grind, thereby forming a curve at the end of each cutting edge. The mounting assembly also holds the blade in a third, freely rotating state in which the blade may substantially freely rotate around its blade rotation axis to enable balancing of the blade after sharpening.

    • A method and apparatus for the sharpening of blades, particularly the blades of a lawnmower are provided. In the present invention, a blade sharpening apparatus with a supporting base comprises a blade retention and positioning mechanism, a blade sharpening mechanism and a guide rod for directing the blade sharpening mechanism laterally across the width of the apparatus. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the blade retention and positioning mechanism includes a hand operated crank for rotating the blade support means. Rotation of the blade support means allows for the proper positioning of the blade with respect to the sharpening mechanism so as to generate the correct sharpening angle for the sharpening of the blade. In such embodiment, the sharpening mechanism may be a lightweight, portable grinder mounted onto a supporting plate for movement along and rotation about a guide rod mounted to said supporting base of the apparatus.

    • A blade sharpener comprises a work surface consisting of a single support line. A grinding wheel defines a plane that contains the support line. The grinding wheel is swingable in the grinding wheel plane to a selected position relative to the support line. A blade is supported on the support line in a manner that produces a first cutting surface on the blade cutting edge. The single support line enables mulching blades to be sharpened without having to impart angular motions in space to them as they are fed past the grinding wheel. The grinding wheel is swingable to different positions relative to the support line, thereby enabling the grinding wheel to produce different cutting surfaces on the blades. Swinging of the grinding wheel is achieved by mounting it to a plate that pivots about an axis perpendicular to the grinding wheel plane. A mobile work table having a top plate of finite area is selectively retainable over and removable from the single line support.
