    • A scanning device for a machine for the automatic sharpening of broaching or reaming tools has a horizontal slide for receiving a tool to be sharpened and a vertical slide having at least one grinding spindle. A scanning finger which can be moved approximately vertically relative to the scanning device is provided for ascertaining the position of a particular tooth and is coupled with at least one member which emits displacement-dependent signals for triggering drive mechanisms for the machine slides. In order to enable a substantially arbitrary, yet precise, guidance of the scanning finger in order to ascertain dimensions which are of importance for the geometry of the tool, the scanning finger is attached on one of two slides which are displaceable at right angles relative to one another and a displacement pickup is associated with each slide for detecting the displacement distance from a position of rest traveled by respective slide.

    • The invention is concerned with performing grinding operations on a workpiece at predetermined locations along its length and is described in connection with a machine for sharpening broaches in which a broach to be sharpened is mounted on a fixed bed, the positions of all the teeth on the broach are sensed by a probe during a first or forward pass of a work head along the whole length of the broach, the information so obtained is fed to a micro-processor and the broach teeth are sharpened in turn by a grinding wheel during a return pass of the work head along the broach using the information obtained by the sensing probe and input data fed initially into the micro-processor by means of a keyboard on a control panel.

    • Grinding machine (1) comprising a first wheelhead (4) for machining flat surfaces and a second wheelhead (10) for machining workpieces (3) such as broaches. The first wheelhead (4) is slidably mounted on a vertical column (6) and has a slide (7) on its underside. The second wheelhead (10) is rotatable about its own axis and is slidably mounted on said slide (7). When the first wheelhead (4) is in its working position, the second wheelhead (10) is placed away from the workpiece (3) on the slide (7) in its rest position (A), and, when the second wheelhead (10) is in its working position (B), said second wheelhead (10) is placed next to the workpiece (3), angularly oriented in order to carry out the helical machining.
