    • An assembling apparatus (manufacturing apparatus) can assemble an actuator (product) in which a shape memory alloy (SMA) is stretched. In the assembly, the SMA is locked by a first holder, a guide is moved along predetermined movement directions while sending the SMA and, after that, the SMA is locked by a second holder. A switch is turned on to pass current from a current source to the SMA via an electrode. The SMA is fixed to two electrodes by caulking members and, after that, an unnecessary portion of the SMA is cut. In such a manner, the actuator is manufactured. Since the SMA is tensioned while current is passed to the SMA as described above, the stretch can be stably performed while suppressing elongation of the SMA. As a result, a product can be manufactured with high quality.

    • A method of tensioning metallic strips on a slitting line is combined with the steps of uncoiling a metallic web having a non-uniform cross sectional thickness from an uncoiler, slitting the web into a plurality of strips having varying thicknesses, and recoiling the strips into individual strip coils on a recoiler, the tensioning method being the additional step of deforming the thinner portions of the web intermediate the uncoiling and recoiling steps so that a raised pattern is imparted to the thinner portions thereby increasing the effective cross sectional thicknesses of the thinner strips to that of the thicker strips so that the strip coils formed from the strips are of similar diameter and the strips can be recoiled at the same rate, thus preventing the formation of slack strips. The apparatus includes a deforming station having a forming roll with a raised pattern formed on its surface, a pressure roll having a width less than that of the forming roll, and a frame for supporting the forming roll above the pressure roll. The frame includes a movable support for the pressure roll which positions the pressure roll and urges it toward or away from the forming roll.

    • Apparatus for maintaining constant tension in wire travelling between two driven rolls, one of which delivers the wire; the other being a take-up roll. The apparatus comprises a detector system actuated by the wire while the wire travels in a straight path between the rolls. The detector system comprises a deflector pulley which deflects a portion of the travelling wire from the straight path and a return pulley which returns it thereto. The return pulley is movable toward or away from the deflector pulley in response to tension variations in the wire. A detector detects the variations in distance between the detector pulleys and produces a corrective signal. This signal is used to vary the speed of one of the two driven rolls, in a direction and to an extent responsive to the variation of said distance, thereby keeping the tension of the wire constant between the driven rolls.
