    • A method of operating a filter press for solid-liquid separation of a product, the filter press comprising a press jacket with an end, and a ram in the press jacket and movable relative to the end to define a pressing space. The method comprising loading a product to be pressed in the pressing space; positioning the ram in a start position so that the product only partially fills the pressing space; advancing the ram, during a first phase of a forward movement, from the start position to a full contact position where the volume of the pressing space becomes equal to a volume of the product; and advancing the ram toward the end from the full contact position during a second phase of the forward movement, the ram exerting no pressure on the product during the first phase but exerting pressure on the product during the second phase to press liquid phase out of the product. At the full contact position, the ram is advanced at a forward velocity lower than an average forward velocity over the first phase.

    • A method of stabilizing pressure and flow conditions in a screening apparatus for treating a pulp is described, the pulp being supplied continuously to the screening apparatus through an inlet and passed through a pulp space along a screen of a screen body and discharged continuously through an outlet, said screen body being moved axially with a forward-going movement during an extraction phase and a backward-going movement during a backflushing phase. The flowrate of the pulp through, and the pressure conditions in, the treating zone of the screening apparatus are controlled by altering the volume at the inlet end and outlet end of the screening apparatus during the movement of the screen body. A screening apparatus for carrying out the method is also described, which comprises a cylinder housing with a piston movable to and fro therein by means of a drive device, said piston defining a first chamber filled with liquid and a second chamber filled with pulp, said pulp chamber being in direct communication with the pulp inlet. Furthermore, a connection channel filled substantially with liquid is disposed between the liquid chamber and an outlet zone of the pulp space located at the outlet for treated pulp.

    • In carbon-in-pulp (CIP) and carbon-in-leach (CIL) processes, especially those utilizing pure oxygen instead of normal air to increase the overall efficiency of the cyanide leaching-adsorption process in the recovery of gold and/or silver from ores, the screen within each tank which surrounds the slurry outlet is kept clean. The cleaning action is accomplished by linearly reciprocating the screen first slowly in one direction, and then quickly in another (to cause back flushing); or by rotating a cleaning rotor on the inside of a cylindrical screen. The cleaning rotor may be connected to the same shaft as an agitator disposed above a draft tube within the tank. The screen surface is tapered in its direction of movement, and during movement has a tendency to transport and concentrate the carbon (charcoal) particles at the far end of the slow stroke, and the concentrated particles can be withdrawn and recirculated to other tanks in the system.
