    • Office furniture units, particularly desks, are fabricated panel members cut from standard pre-finished flat wood panels, their precise final configuration, by an NC controlled automatic router, including all holes, recesses and the like required in each panel member. The panel members have configurations which constitute the intelligence to assure their precise alignment as they are subassembled into furniture panel components by securing the appropriate panel members together in multiple layers, and for reception of two-part mechanical fasteners in appropriate positions to insure proper positioning of the panel components with respect to one another in the final assembly of the panel components into a functional office furniture unit. The panel components are assembled with one another in T-joint fashion, with the edge surface of one panel abutting a major side surface of the respective transverse panel to which being joined, using cam-type fastener components which secure the panel components together in firm edge-abutment relationships. The multiple layers of panel members provide reinforcement and rigidity of the panel components where necessary, as well as visual thickness effect. In each instance, one of the panel members is of the configuration of the final panel component. Several of the panel members include edge tabs which protrude laterally of the respective subassembled components for interfitting in recesses provided in mating panels to provide enhanced shear strength across the T-joint interpanel connections in the final assembly of the furniture unit. The structure and method also provide flexibility to produce differing furniture items in successive machining and assembly operations, for rapid production of a variety of different products "to order" from a single machine production line.

    • An interchangeable modular furniture system is disclosed as including an underlying supporting structure having at least spaced side walls and a top wall with panels independently and removably mounted to at least one of the walls of the underlying supporting structure. Preferably, independently and removably mounted panels cover at least the spaced side walls and top wall of the underlying supporting structure. Cooperative releasable fasteners are attached to each panel and associated wall for releasable attachment to each other. The underlying supporting structure further includes a base having an underlying ledge adjacent each of the spaced side walls for also supporting the removable panels relative to the spaced side walls. Within the underlying supporting structure, shelves, drawers and/or doors may be employed in order to produce various types of furniture units including credenzas, dressers and dressers/cabinets. In addition, the aforementioned structure can be usefully employed for bars, desks, nightstands and other furniture pieces. The present invention also includes a modular bed system including an underlying mattress supporting structure and a headboard removably mounted relative to the underlying mattress supporting structure or to an adjacent wall, as may be desired.

    • A desk or table having a top which can be mounted horizontally or on a slope. Bolts pass through end panel supports and into brackets on the ends of the desk top. Three levels of holes on three of the brackets provide alternative mounting holes for the bolts depending on whether one wants a level top or a sloped top. The rear corner bolt passes through an insert which fits in an aperture in the end panel. The insert includes an eccentrically located hole through which the bolt passes. By orienting the insert with the hole in a first position when the desk top is level, and reorienting the insert with the hole in a second position when the desk top is slanted, one insures that the rear corner of the desk stays properly aligned with the rear corner of the end panels.
