    • Dual-bearing reel centrifugal braking mechanism in which rapid adjustment of braking force is enabled. The centrifugal braking mechanism includes a plurality of shifters, a cylindrical brake element, a switching mechanism, and an identification mark. The shifters are allowed to shift diametrically fitted radially onto a rotor. The brake element, furnished in the reel unit to be non-rotatable with respect thereto, is disposed outer-peripheral endwise of the shifters, wherein the shifters can shift into contact with the brake element. By translating the shifters into different diametrical positions, the switching mechanism enables switching between an operative state wherein the shifters can come into contact with the brake element, and an inoperative state wherein the shifters cannot. The identification mark is for discriminating shifters switched into the operative state from shifters switched into the inoperative state.

The stationary member is non-rotatably coupled to a brake case 64 in a movable manner in the axial direction. The braking force is adjusted by moving the stationary member in the axial direction. The coupling pin non-rotatably couples the rotary member to a spool shaft 16 in a movable manner in the axial direction. The braking force adjusting mechanism is a member for adjusting the braking force that is generated when the stationary member is moved in the axial direction to make contact with the braking members.

    • In a fishing reel, in addition to an externally adjustable brake system, an automatic spool brake system adjusts spool braking action dependent upon spool rotation speed to provide brake control for preventing backlash and to achieve better casting distance by reducing spool braking force at low spool rotation speeds. A brake assembly has a plurality of brake shoes and speed adjust shoes and is slidably mounted on a spool shaft. An adjustable brake ring selectively engages the brake shoes to provide a braking action to the spool. A spring is provided for biasing the brake assembly away from the brake. Centrifugal force causes the speed adjust shoes to migrate outwardly in contact with a conical surface. The shoes impart an axial force to the brake assembly for moving the assembly towards the brake ring. At lower speeds, the spring pushes the brake assembly away from the brake ring.

Additionally, the brake assembly further includes a selector that is operable remotely from the brake weight placeable selectively in a first and a second state for i) preventing the brake weight from moving from the second position into the first position as the spool assembly is rotated at the first predetermined velocity with the selector in the first state and ii) allowing the brake weight to move from the second position into the first position as the spool assembly is rotated at the first predetermined velocity with the selector in the second state.
