    • A speed reduction mechanism is provided to a strap supporting post having a winding mechanism capable of automatically winding a strap around it; the reduction mechanism includes a rotary member turnable together with the winding mechanism, and a stationary member secured to on top of the post; the rotary member has rubbing bars pivoted to a middle part thereof; the rubbing bars are biased towards the middle part by tension springs; centrifugal force will act on the rubbing bars when the winding mechanism rotates after the strap has been released from stretched position; the rubbing bars are pivoted towards the stationary member when speed of rotation of the winding mechanism is so high that the centrifugal force is greater than force of the tension springs, thus slowing down rotation of the winding mechanism, and preventing the free end of the strap from swing too fast.

    • An automatic cable winder for use, for example, with a vacuum cleaner includes a device for latching the cable drum to prevent its rotation in a winding direction, and a braking device to ensure that the cable is wound smoothly and uniformly. The braking device comprises a brake housing, a disc journalled therein, brake blocks pivotally mounted on the disc for engagement with the brake housing, and a friction wheel coupled to the disc and drivable by the drum. The brake housing is rotatable about a pin disposed eccentrically relative to the disc. The brake housing is coupled to the latching mechanism whereby the friction wheel is driven by the drum when the latching mechanism is released.

    • An apparatus, a system and a method have a speed-limiting braking mechanism. The apparatus may use a leash to limit a velocity of movement of a pet relative to a velocity of movement of a user of the apparatus. The speed-limiting braking mechanism within the apparatus may prevent the relative velocity from exceeding a predetermined threshold without abruptly stopping unwinding of the leash. The speed-limiting braking mechanism may have a rotatable pinion component connected to one or more brake shoes. The leash may be connected to a spool. Unwinding of the leash may rotate the spool, and rotation of the spool may rotate the pinion component. If the relative velocity exceeds the predetermined threshold, the one or more brake shoes may engage a braking liner to maintain the relative velocity at the predetermined threshold.

    • A speed governing mechanism is provided utilizing plano-centric gearing and centrifugal braking. An outer cylindrical member serves as a cable drum and is rotated by playing out of the cable.
