    • A noncontacting dimension measuring instrument is disclosed which utilizes an optical scanner and a pulse width measuring circuit. It is adapted to measure a dimension of a surface feature of a workpiece, especially for use as an automatic readout for a hardness testing machine. The measuring instrument utilizes a video detector, a level detector and a gating circuit which gates out or excludes unwanted video pulses. In hardness testing where the video signal may be produced by multiple reflections from a single indentation, logic means are provided to exclude the effect of reflections from the bottom of the indentation. The gate signal is produced by a gate generator in response to a start of scan detector signal which is adjusted in position and width to coincide with and slightly overlap the desired video pulse. The gate output is applied to a constant amplitude pulse generator and the time average value of the constant amplitude pulses is proportional to the dimension of the surface feature being measured.

    • An asynchronous to synchronous converter is disclosed which produces clock pulses in synchronism with data bits of a non-return-to-zero (NRZ) code having a variable data rate. The converter is established adapted for use in optical reading of the Universal Products Code (UPC) code symbol which is of bar code format. The converter comprises a high level bit clock system for clocking the dark bar bits and a low level bit clock system for clocking the light bar bits. A high level measurement circuit times the single bit dark bar pulses and sets the timing for the low level bit clock system and a low level measurement circuit times the single bit low level pulses and sets the timing for the high level bit clock system. The converter receives asynchronous serial data and produces a clock pulse for each bit of the data pulse so that the serial data may be decoded.

    • A terminal connector assembly is disclosed, for joining a connector plug or the like to a multi-conductor shield and cable. The assembly comprises first and second backshell housing members. The first or forward housing member has a closed tubular configuration at its forward end, joinable with the connector plug. The remote portion of the housing is of partial tubular configuration, preferably semi-cylindrical, and has a threaded portion at its remote and extremity. A second backshell housing is complementary to the partial tubular configuration of the first housing member and interfits closely with it, having a complementary threaded portion at its end extremity. A tubular sleeve is insertable laterally into the open side of the backshell member. The sleeve houses clamping rings securing the shielding braid of the cable. The construction allows the braid to be engaged and clamped prior to lateral installation of the sleeve within the backshell housing. Preparation of the general assembly is greatly expedited and improved. Improved EMI/RFI radiation shielding is provided by locating the sleeve to bridge the area adjacet the threaded portion of the housing.

    • An electromechanical resonator is disclosed for use in optical scanning systems. The resonator comprises a torsionally resonant system including a torsion rod having one end fixed to a nodal zone member and an oscillatory mass at the free end. A flexurally resonant system includes a pair of oppositely disposed flexure arms extending transversely of the torsional axis and having their inner ends fixed to the nodal zone member. The nodal zone member is suspended by a coupling spring from a frame member and the coupling spring permits energy transfer from the flexurally resonant system to the torsional resonant system through nodal zone member. The resonant systems are maintained in oscillation by electrodynamic means coupled with the flexure arms.

    • An optical scanner is disclosed for reading of bar code symbols on packages moving through a reading field. The scanner generates a polyphase scan pattern which is adapted for omnidirectional reading of a bar code symbol. The scanner, in one embodiment, comprises an oscillatory mirror driven by an electromechanical resonator for producing beam deflection along the amplitude axis and includes a rotary multifaceted mirror for producing beam deflection along the time axis. In another embodiment an optical galvanometer is used to produce beam deflection along the amplitude axis and in this embodiment a substantially straight line trace is produced in addition to the polyphase pattern.

The converter comprises a first bit clock generator which is adapted to produce a first timing signal for the first bit clock pulse of a data pulse which is one or more bits in width. The bit width is measured separately for high level and low level data pulses and the timing signal is generated accordingly. It also comprises a second bit clock generator which produces successive timing signals, one for each additional bit width, according to the maximum allowable number of bits per data pulse. Means are provided for compensating for systematic error in measured bit widths such as caused by ink spread variations. Additionally, means are provided to insert a bit clock pulse in the event of a missing pulse in the bit clock stream. Also, a digital noise rejection means is provided.

    • An optical scanner is disclosed for reading of optical bar codes of the type used for point-of-sale data acquisition. The optical scanner provides a 3-line scan pattern adapted for omnidirectional reading of a bar code symbol. Beam deflection means in the path of a single light beam is operative to deflect the beam about a deflection axis and to tilt the deflection axis from one deflection plane to another after each beam deflection thereby producing three trace segments in separate deflection planes. Trace orienting means in each of the deflection planes redirect the beams so that the trace segments are projected into the scanning field to produce 3-line pattern of trace segments.
