    • Blank metal ingots particularly steel of uniform weight per piece and cross section are formed with a mold which is made up of a plurality of superposed vertical sections which together define an interior mold cavity of uniform cross section over its total height. The steel which is produced in a known steel making method is first tapped into a casting ladle which is provided with a refractory lining. A plurality of mold sections are built up one after the other over a casting plate and the steel is directed upwardly through a bottom opening on the plate into the mold cavity and as soon as the mold is completely filled the slide plate is closed. For casting ingots of round or polygonal cross section with diameters of 200 to 350 millimeters the steel is bottom poured into the mold cavity at a rate of rise of from 30 to 80 centimeters per minute and the surface of the melt is not covered but is maintained as cold as possible. The inflow to the mold cavity is exactly centered and for ingots of diameters of larger than 300 millimeters the mold is covered with a heat insulating powder and the rate of rise is maintained between 10 to 30 centimeters per minute. A mold is constructed of carbonrich iron whose inner cross section is constant over its total length and which is divided in axial direction into several sections, with the total length of the mold being greater than 2 meters and having a clearance less than 250 millimeters. The mold is characterized by the fact that its weight is at least 1.3 times the weight of the ingot which is formed.

    • A fluidized bed furnace for burning particularly sludges, comprises a housing having a bottom supporting a fluidized bed thereabove with wall means extending upwardly from the bottom and above the fluidized bed which define a combustion chamber thereabove. The tubular connection socket is connected into the wall means adjacent the bottom, preferably on a side thereof which is opposite to the inlet for the sludge material to be burned. A first outer tubular connection extends through the socket and is supported on, and sealed with, the socket and terminates in an inner end which extends into the furnace in the area of the fluidized bed. This first outer tube is connected to a first source of compressed air, and a second source of compressed air is connected to an inner lancing tube which extends through the outer tube and terminates in a discharge in the fluid bed area of the furnace. In addition, the outer tube is connected to a fuel supply and the second source of compressed air is regulated in accordance with the pressure conditions in the inner tube in order to regulate the pressure to provide adequate fuel feeding.

    • The assembly has a supporting structure for high pressure hydraulic nozzles, the supporting structure including a single shield-like structural member, having a channel cross-section open toward the working face, and which is rigid against bending and extends, parallel to the working face, between two roadways. Winch drag means extend along the two roadways and act on respective opposite end portions of the structural member to move the latter in the direction of advance of the workings. High pressure nozzles are mounted on the flange edge portions of the supporting structure projecting toward the working face, being positioned at fixed locations and being adjustable perpendicularly to their discharge axes. Alternatively, a carrier mounting the high pressure nozzles is movable longitudinally of the supporting structure to travel parallel to and along the entire length of the working face. The supporting structure is inclined in the backward direction, toward the old works, for permitting the caving-in roof to slide down toward the old works. The supporting structure also is divided longitudinally into a roof portion and a base portion, the two portions being adjustable relative to each other. Conveyors extending along the roadways receive the dislodged portions of the mineral deposit, such as coal, and convey the same to a collecting area. The supporting structure furthermore may be designed as a conveying trough discharging into the conveyors.

    • An apparatus for physically reducing material in which a rotor is rotatable on the axis of a vertical housing. The inner wall of the housing is in the form of axial wear plates which have side edges engaging carrier members in the housing.
