    • An electronic valve characterizer for fuel-air ratio control wherein the primary valve may be arbitrarily set and the secondary valve or valves are actuated by a slave motor or motors to a predetermined ratio of fuel to air for any setting of the primary valve. The primary and secondary valves are each controlled by motor-actuated valves, each having a slide wire and a slide. The secondary slide is set to operate at a speed in excess of the primary slide. The signal from the primary slide is passed through an amplifier having adjustable rates of amplification in each of a series of adjustable sectors of the movement of the primary slide. The amplified signal is compared with an amplified secondary slide signal and the secondary motor energize to bring the amplified secondary slide signal into general equality with the amplified primary slide signal.

    • A detector for detecting the position of the edges of a moving strip which produces an electrical signal proportional to the transverse position of the strip. A light source shines on the edge of the strip. A smooth surfaced sheet of translucent plastic material containing a fluorescent pigment is placed below the edge and opposite the light source. The pigment in the portion of the sheet of the strip and exposed to the light source outside the edge fluoresces producing light energy in amounts proportional to the area of the sheet exposed to the light source. This light energy travels between the sheet surfaces to the edges of the sheet. Photoelectric sensitive means are operatively associated with the edges of the sheet for producing an electrical signal proportional to the amount of fluorescent generated light energy which signal can be amplified to control power means for respositioning the strip.

UPSTREAM AND DOWNSTREAM PRESSURE TAPS ARE PROVIDED IN THE BODY MEMBER FOR ASCERTAINING AIR AND GAS FLOWS. A FLAT ANNULAR MEMBER HAVING OPENINGS THERETHROUGH IS POSITIONED BETWEEN THE SECONDARY AIR AND THE SECONDARY COMBUSTION CHAMBER IN ONE MODIFICATION OF THE BURNER DISCLOSED TO STABILIZER THE BURNER FLAME. THE BURNER MAY BE MOUNTED IN THE ROOF, HEARTH OR THE WALL OF A FURNACE AND WHEN MOUNTED IN THE WALL OF A FURNACE, A VENTURI TILE MAY BE POSITIONED AXIALLY OF THE BURNER TO INSURE HIGH ENTRAINMENT AND RECIRCULATION OF FURNACE GASES.

    • Safety shutoff valve structure and method, wherein the valve is a ball valve sealed by an annular flexible seal urged into engagement with the valve by a garter spring whereby on opening the valve substantially no pressure drop is developed across the valve, and wherein a compression spring is provided for urging the valve stem in one direction to close the valve, a lever and detent means therefor are connected to the valve stem by a solenoid actuated spring clutch responsive to a predetermined condition whereby on rotating the valve stem to place the valve in an open position, the valve is maintained in the open position until occurrence of the predetermined condition. The spring clutch is operated with a uniform force not dependent on the valve opening torque or compression spring strength and the spring clutch is engaged with a force greater than the actuating force on moving the valve to an open position.
