    • A fluorescent lighting system has: (A) a central power supply connected with regular power line voltage and including a number of power supply modules (e.g., eight), each such module having: (i) a parallel-resonant self-oscillating bridge inverter operative to provide a 35 kHz sinusoidal output voltage at a pair of primary output terminals; (ii) a tank-inductor and a tank-capacitor parallel-connected across the primary output terminals; and (iii) several (e.g., four) pairs of secondary output terminals, each connected with the primary output terminals via its own dedicated current-limiting sub- circuit; thereby to prevent a load connected with a pair of secondary output terminals from drawing more than a certain amount of power; thereby, in turn, to render each pair of secondary output terminals fire-hazard-safe; (B) a plurality of lighting fixtures (e.g., 32), each having a fluorescent lamp and a power input receptacle; each lighting fixture also including a power-factor-corrected 35 Khz ballast connected between its power input receptacle and its fluorescent lamp; and (C) a light-weight power cord plug-in-connected between the power input receptacle of each lighting fixture and one of the pairs of power output terminals. Thus, a single central multi-port power supply will serve to power a large number (e.g., 32) lighting fixtures, with each individual lighting fixture connected directly with one of the many (e.g., 32) individual pairs of secondary power output terminals of the central power supply.

    • A bridge rectifier is connected with a 277Volt/60 Hz power line and provides full-wave-rectified unfiltered DC voltage to a series-combination of: i) an inductor, ii) a full bridge inverter switched in synchronism with the 60 Hz power line voltage, and iii) an electronic switching device. A fluorescent lamp is connected with the inverter's output and receives 60 Hz current of exceptionally low crest-factor, thereby operating at an exceptionally high efficacy. The electronic switching device is normally in a fully conductive state. However, it is controlled--by a photo sensor responsive to the light output of the fluorescent lamp--in such a manner that whenever the instantaneous light output exceeds a certain adjustably predetermined upper level, it switches into a non-conductive state where it remains until the instantaneous light output level diminishes to a certain adjustably predetermined lower level. Whenever the electronic switching device is switched off while current flows through the inductor, a flywheel diode shunts the current away from the switching device and into an energy-storing capacitor, the DC voltage on which is used for filling-in the valleys between the individual 120 Hz DC pulses on the unfiltered power supply.

    • A half-bridge inverter is powered from a constant-magnitude DC supply voltage and provides at the inverter's output a first AC output voltage that is describable as a modified squarewave voltage. This first AC voltage is applied across a series-combination of an inductor and a capacitor, the junction between which is clamped to the DC supply voltage. As a result, a second AC voltage gets established across the capacitor; which second AC voltage is also describable as being a modified squarewave voltage. However, the phasing of the second AC voltage is delayed by approximately 90 degrees with respect to the first AC voltage; which results in the voltage across the inductor being of approximately sinusoidal waveform. A fluorescent lamp is connected in series with a ballast capacitor; and the lamp-capacitor series combination is connected across the inductor, thereby resulting in a nearly sinusoidal current being provided to the fluorescent lamp. Lamp starting aid is provided by a voltage-doubling circuit supplying a high-magnitude current-limited DC voltage across the ballast capacitor for ignition purposes.

    • A lighting fixture is powered from an ordinary power line and has an inverter-type ballast for powering a fluorescent lamp. This ballast comprises an inverter means whose frequency of oscillation can be influenced by receipt of a control signal at a pair of control terminals. An optical sensor is located within the fixture in such manner as to intercept part of the light emitted by the fluorescent lamp. This sensor provides a control signal proportional to the amount of light emitted by the lamp, and this control signal is applied to the ballast control terminals in such manner as to regulate the inverter frequency as a function of the light level, thereby correspondingly to regulate the magnitude of the current fed to the fluorescent lamp. By providing a threshold means in combination with high gain in the control loop, the fixture light level may be accurately maintained at any desired value substantially regardless of any changes in magnitude of power line voltage and/or in lamp efficacy. When lamp efficacy falls below some minimum level, a warning signal is provided.

    • A magnetic-type ballast powers an F40/T12 four foot fluorescent lamp from a regular 120 Volt/60 Hz power line by way of a main inductor. A power factor correction capacitor is connected in series with an auxiliary inductor of relatively small inductance value, thereby forming a series-combination; which series-combination is connected across the power line. A 30 Volt/60 Hz voltage is established across this auxiliary inductor. The phasing of this 30 Volt/60 Hz voltage is opposite that of the 120 Volt/60 Hz power line voltage. Thus, by adding the 30 Volt/.alpha.Hz voltage to the 120 Volt/60 Hz voltage, a 150 Volt/60 Hz voltage is obtained; which 150 Volt/60 Hz voltage is of magnitude adequate to properly power the F40/T12 four foot fluorescent lamp, although it is not of magnitude adequate to provide proper lamp ignition in a rapid-start mode.A small inverter-type power supply is used for providing cathode heating power to the lamp's thermionic cathodes as well as for providing lamp ignition voltage by way of a relatively high-magnitude (250 Volt) high-frequency (30 kHz) voltage supplied to the lamp through a high-pass filter and operative to rapid-start the lamp. After the lamp has been rapid-started by this 250 Volt/30 kHz ignition voltage, it is ready to be properly powered by the 150 Volt/60 Hz voltage. After lamp ignition, power output from the power supply is halted, thereby removing both cathode heating power as well as lamp ignition voltage.

    • In a combined telephone and electric power distribution system, both telephone signals and electric power are distributed by way of a common distribution system wherein signal conducting means (such as optical fibers) and electric power conducting means are routed alongside each other to/from various utilization points, such as to/from a telephone instrument, a computer, an electric lighting fixture and/or a power receptacle. At some of these utilization points, telephone signal receptacles are provided alongside electric power receptacles. At other points, the signal conducting means is terminated in a radio transceiver and wireless signal radiation/receiving means. In a typical situation, such a transceiver has its antenna mounted at or near a ceiling lighting fixture; which radio antenna interacts with some other transceiver combined with a telephone and/or other information-handling apparatus located nearby. In addition to being used for transmitting telephone and/or other information signals, the signal conducting means is used for controlling the flow and/or usage of electric power, such as control of light from individual lighting fixtures, for distributed protection against electrical circuit overload and/or fire hazards. Also included is a provision for supplying uninterruptible power to selected utilization points.

    • A self-oscillating half-bridge inverter is powered from a power-line-operated rectifier means providing a DC voltage with a relatively high ripple content. The inverter is loaded by way of a series-tuned high-Q LC cirucit connected across this DC voltage. A pair of fluorescenet lamps is series-connected across the tank-capacitor of the LC circuit. Also connected across the DC voltage is an arrangement of three energy-storing capacitors charged in series and discharged in parallel; which arrangement results in the current drawn from the power line being of relatively high power factor and low harmonic distortion. Charging current for the energy-storing capacitors is derived from the high frequency current flowing through the LC circuit; and charging occurs only during periods near the peak of the power line voltage. An effect of the charging function is that of improving the crest factor of the current flowing through the fluorescent lamps compared with what it otherwise would have been in view of the high ripple content of the DC voltage.
