    • A suction braking apparatus for the braking and overlapping of sheets coming from a duplex crosscutter is provided which has a single suction chamber and can be quickly changed over to accommodate sheets of a different width. The suction chamber is provided with two groups of suction holes arranged in a row in the direction of travel of the sheets and has cover plates perforated in register therewith and each has a perforated control belt. Each group of suction holes has associated therewith a cover slide which is movable at a right angle to the direction of sheet travel with the two cover slides reciprocally covering a group of suction holes, starting from one of the two side edges and up to a junction extending in the direction of sheet travel.

    • An apparatus for winding a web of material has first and second supporting rolls each driven by a motor and has a gap therebetween wherein the spool of the web of goods being rolled is pressure biased by a pressure roll disposed thereabove. A control mechanism for the motors controls same so that as the coil diameter increases, the torque of the motor associated with the first supporting roll increases in the direction of movement of the web and the torque of the motor associated with the second supporting roll decreases in the direction of the movement of the web. The drives of the two supporting rolls are coupled by a brake of speed proportional braking torque for damping accelerations of the supporting rolls due to the displacement of the web from at least one thereof.

    • A labeling station in a machine of the type for labeling objects and having a plurality of successively disposed stations, comprising a gluing station a label magazine station and a label transfer station. The labeling station comprises at least one pickup element for labels rotatably mounted on a revolving carrier between the pickup surface thereof and the center of curvature thereof and which is driven so that upon moving past the stations on each revolution of the carrier, its receiving surface rolls against the upper flat label of the label magazine station. A marker is associated with each pickup element and has a field for at least one marking type thereon and is rotatably and pivotally mounted on the carrier and driven synchronously with the associated pickup element. The pivot point of the marker is diametrically opposite the type field, the radius of curvature of the type field and the eccentricity of the mounting of the pivot point of the marker is coordinated with the circulation path of the area to be printed on the pickup element to effect the rolling of the type field upon the receiving surface of the pickup element.

    • A method for filling a shipping carton with flat-folded boxes supplied in substantially horizontal shingled array from a processing machine, comprising positioning an empty carton in displaceable manner on a support below the supply from said processing machine, supporting said boxes in shingled array while advancing them along a curved path to substantially vertical shingled array, discharging said vertically shingled boxes successively into said carton, and supporting said discharged boxes on one flat surface thereof within said carton, whereby the force of said boxes as discharged causes said carton to be displaced on its support. The apparatus includes a pair of cooperating curved conveyors extending from said manufacturing machine conveyor to said carton, whereby said boxes are transferred from horizontal shingled array to vertical shingled array and are successively discharged into said carton in vertical disposition. A pulley about which one of the curved conveyors is trained, in operative position is disposed within said carton so that successively discharged boxes, with said pulley as a back stop, cause said carton to advance on its support. When the carton is filled, the pulley and its conveyor are raised, the carton is removed and replaced by an empty carton and the process is repeated.

    • A labeling machine has a revolving carrier on which at least one pickup element has a convexly curved receiving surface eccentrically journaled between the receiving surface and the center of curvature thereof. A drive is provided for each pickup element comprising a stationary cam and an arm which follows the cam and imparts to the pickup element an oscillating movement through a drive shaft. The stationary cam comprises a cylindrical cam truck and the drive shaft of each pickup element is coupled with the associated arm for movement by the stationary cam along the drive shaft through a cam consisting of two opposite parallel cam sections. The cam sections extend at an angle to a plane perpendicular to the shaft axis and cam followers are associated with these cam sections. The distance between the two cam sections is adjustable such that any free play present between them and the cam followers can be eliminated.
