    • An apparatus for winding a web onto a roll has a pair of support rollers extending along respective substantially parallel horizontal axes and defining an upwardly open cradle holding the roll, a bottom plate extending axially underneath the rollers, and respective axially extending side plates extending upward from the bottom plate and engaging the rollers. The rollers, rolls, bottom plate, and side plates together form an axially extending and laterally closed space. A pair of axially spaced end plates lying in respective upright planes and closing ends of the space are each shaped to fit between the rollers and between the side plates and each can slide axially along the bottom and floor plates between an outer position spaced axially from the rollers and roll and an inner position between the rollers and engaging a respective axial end of the roll. The space between the end plates can be pressurized with air. A drive displaces the end plates between their positions.

    • A method of winding a continuous web on a succession of cores comprises the steps of sequentially rotating a core to which the web is attached to longitudinally advance the web and wind it on the core while applying a strip of adhesive to a transfer roller and then stopping rotation of the core. Subsequently a crosswise row of perforations is formed in the web offset from the core and then the web is longitudinally advanced while pressing the roller against the web to transfer the adhesive strip to the web at and immediately upstream and downstream from the perforation row. The web is subsequently differentially. longitudinally advanced web upstream and downstream of the perforation row to tear the web longitudinally apart at the perforation row, thereby forming a trailing web end attached to the web wound on the core and a leading web end each carrying some of the adhesive strip. The trailing web end is then pressed against the web on the core to adhere it thereto and the core is replaced with a fresh core and then the leading web end is adhesively attached to the fresh core. At the end the web is again advanced the web and wound on the fresh core while applying another adhesive strip to the transfer roller.

    • A method of and device for winding webs of material, especially webs of paper or cardboard, on cores. In the method, the web is wound on cores in a bed created by two drums and the full reels are ejected from the bed above one drum by an arm that swings around the other. Wound reels with a short diameter are compressed between the ejection surface on the ejection arm and the drum that the reel is being ejected over and are lifted out of the bed by a rotation of the drum. The device has a mechanism for ejecting full reels that swings forward toward the bed created by two drums and has an ejection arm with an ejection surface that extends more or less radially toward the drum that the reel swings around. The ejection surface in one embodiment extends as far as the drum that the reel swings around and, once is has swung forward, its upper demarcation will extend into the vicinity of the adjacent drum. Another embodiment of the device also has a combination reel-ejection and core-insertion mechanism that has an ejection arm and a core-insertion structure, whereby the ejection surface on the arm terminates at a distance from the drum and the core-insertion structure releases the cores through the space between the ejection surface and the drum. The ejection surface can, when the ejection-and-insertion mechanism is at rest, be moved or extended toward the drum that the reel swings around.
