    • Pumping requirements for chromatograph applications are for constant flow at high and variable pressures and for accurate programmable control of liquid composition. A two-cylinder pump, pumping system, and associated controls provide an accurate, fixed flow rate. A low pressure gradient former controls composition. During the initial portion of the pumping stroke of a first piston in which fluid is being compressed due to its finite bulk modulus of elasticity its check valve remains closed, a second piston provides all the flow required at a fixed rotational speed. Then, once the first piston has reached its bottom dead center, the control system switches to a constant-pressure control mode, thereby maintaining the flow rate at a fixed value. Constant-pressure control is again switched off either when the second piston's discharge check valve closes, or when the second piston's inlet check valve opens, and pump control returns to fixed rotational speed. Determining the angular displacement at which to effect these control-mode switches is carried out by monitoring the discharge pressure and storing the values of the angular displacement at which the first temporal derivative of pressure changes rapidly. The invention provides novel arrangement for synchronizing the gradient generator by equating recompression volume to recompression volume of the high pressure pump.

    • To make an inexpensive chromatographic column and perform chromatography with it, column walls and a column end with an inlet port are molded integrally from plastic and a snap-on end is molded integrally with an outlet port from plastic. A filter is placed in one end of the column and the column is filled with packing material up to the second end. A filter is placed on top of the packing and a snap-on end with a molded outlet port is snapped onto the body with linear motion until an interference fit is formed. As the body and snap-on end are moved together cantilever members formed integrally with the snap on end are bent outwardly by detent members until the detent members are captured by an opening in the cantilever members.

    • A liquid level monitor using a pressure actuated sensor to replace the open bubble tube. Air flows down the supply tube as in the bubbler, but rather than being released into the water, the air enters a chamber that has one movable wall, such as a diaphragm, that is acted on from the inside by pressurized air and from the outside by the hydrostatic head of the water. When the water pressure exceeds the chamber air pressure, the movable wall is pressed against an air outlet and does not allow air in the chamber to escape through the air outlet. One embodiment uses a diaphragm disposed over the air outlet; however, the concept may be extended to several other movable members, such as a piston with low actuation force. When the air chamber pressure exceeds the water pressure, the movable member moves away from the air outlet, releasing air and causing the chamber pressure to drop down to the water pressure.
