    • A bottle-filling apparatus includes a filling head whose outlet is to be placed in communication with the interior of a bottle or similar receptacle. Annular valve seat surrounds the internal liquid-conveying passage of the filling head, and a valve member is movable into and out of engagement with the valve seat between a valve-opening and a valve-closing position. A venting conduit is carried by the valve member coaxially therewith and extending therethrough and has an inlet opening which communicates with the interior of the bottle when the outlet of the filling head similarly communicates with the bottle. The venting conduit serves to vent gas from the interior of the receptacle in response to admission of liquid into the latter until such time as the level of liquid rises to and closes the inlet opening whereupon a cushion of compressed gas develops above the liquid level and prevents continued flow of liquid into the bottle. Throttling means is provided which defines two narrow annular gaps, spaced axially from one another, in the interior of the liquid passage of the filling head, serving to prevent the compressed gas of the cushion from penetrating and escaping through the liquid contained in the passage.

    • Apparatus for introducing arrayed bottles into crates comprises an arraying table which receives randomly distributed bottles from an upper feed conveyor and includes devices for arranging the bottles in a series of rows so that the foremost bottle of each row advances toward and tilts one of a series of control levers. When all of the levers are tilted by the bottles of the resulting array on the table, they permit a light-sensitive signal generator to actuate a transfer unit which comprises pneumatically operated grippers movable along a path having vertical, horizontal and downwardly inclined portions. The grippers then move downwardly to engage the bottles of an array, upwardly above the table, sideways along a horizontal, thereupon along a downwardly inclined and finally along a vertical portion of the path to introduce the array into a crate which is held in raised position by a vertically reciprocable platform forming part of a lower feed conveyor which advances empty crates to receiving positions located below and laterally adjacent to the arraying table. The crates are staggered during movement with the second feed conveyor, and the apparatus is further provided with guides which engage and guide the bottles of an array during downward movement with the grippers toward a raised crate.

    • Plastic caps of the type having a cupped central portion, an annular marginal portion and a lifting tab extending downwardly and outwardly from the marginal portion are applied to the open tops of bottles which travel along a circular path by means of attachments which can be secured to the capping units of a conventional bottle capping machine. Each attachment has a twopiece ram which is moved downwardly by the respective capping unit while the latter tracks a fixed cam whereby the ring-shaped outer part of each ram depresses the marginal portion of a cap during a first stage of each revolution of the associated capping unit so that the marginal portion remains spaced from the open top of the bottle and that the space between the marginal portion and the top can be cleaned to expel liquid particles and/or foam. In the next stage of each revolution, the outer part of the ram moves the marginal portion into abutment with the open top and the plunger-like inner part of the ram simultaneously engages and forces the central portion of the cap into the open top of the aligned bottle.

    • Bottles, cans or like containers which tend to undergo deformation in response to excessive reduction of internal pressure below atmospheric pressure are filled with beer or another liquid which is adversely affected by contact with air by evacuating some air from their interior so that the pressure in the interior of a container does not decrease below a pressure at which the container is subject to deformation, circulating through the interior of the container an inert gas to expel the remainder of air, raising the pressure of inert gas in the interior of the container, and thereupon admitting into the container a stream of liquid at a pressure corresponding to the pressure of inert gas in the interior of the container whereby the liquid expels the gas and fills the container to a desired level. The pressure in the interior of the thus filled container is reduced prior to sealing.

    • A bottle capping machine wherein the capping units orbit about a vertical axis and have sockets which travel past a transfer station where each socket receives a cap which is thereupon engaged by a permanent magnet and is lifted toward a sealing ram of the respective unit while the latter moves toward registry with a filled bottle. The transfer station accommodates a vertically adjustable platform which supports a chute for delivery of caps to successive sockets and a stop which centers the caps in the sockets to place them into an optimum position for engagement with the respective magnets. A deflector is mounted on the platform to expel, if necessary, from successive sockets caps and/or fragments of bottles before such sockets reach the transfer station.
