    • A carton packing apparatus occupying a small footprint for efficient packing of articles includes a longitudinal frame housing and an article transfer means. The longitudinal frame housing has an article accumulation platform mounted within and in line with the longitudinal direction of the frame housing, wherein articles and cartons are fed transversely relative to the longitudinal direction of the frame housing to an article loading station and a carton receiving station respectively located adjacent opposite ends of the accumulation platform. The article transfer means is movably mounted within the frame housing, the transfer means being movable over an internal pathway substantially in line with the accumulation platform between an article pick up position and article dispensing condition. In an operating condition a predetermined number of articles at the article loading station are transferred to the accumulation platform, and wherein the transfer means transfers a predetermined number of articles on the accumulation platform to the carton receiving station over the internal pathway for filling the carton with the articles.

    • A packaging machine includes a grouper section having changeable lane sizes and a dual servo grouper that separates product into product sets and allow the product sets to accelerate to the lane chain speed in a controlled manner. The grouper section further includes disappearing lugs that pivot into the lanes via a cam surface provided in the lanes. The product rides upon a raised surface of the cam surface as the lug pushes the product set together down the lane, thus ensuring that no gaps are provided between product set members. A gripper/grid section of the packaging machine includes a bars that travel about a carousel with a gripper head assembly and a grid assembly pair moving up and down the bars as defined by cam surfaces within the gripper/grid section. The grid section is presented below the product set such that the product set is fed through the grid section in a one-way trip into a case. The gripper head assembly cam device and the case feed section both include height adjustment assemblies.

    • An apparatus for assisting the manual loading and unloading of bottles into and out of cases comprising a guide plate, a bottle holder, a bottle holder actuating mechanism, and a handle. The bottle holder comprises a pair of flaps pivotally connected to the guide plate, the flaps being adjacent and parallel to one another, and the flaps being movable between a closed and an open position. The flaps have a bottle retaining structure for retaining the bottles in the bottle holder. Each flap of the pair of flaps of the bottle holder has a pivot axis about which the flaps may pivot. The pivot axis is located below a plane defined by the tops of the bottles when the bottles are retained by the bottle retaining structure. The flaps are selectively moved between the open and the closed position by the bottle holder actuating mechanism, capturing the bottles within the bottle retaining structure. The case filling and unloading apparatus, with the bottles captured therein, may be lifted by a handle connected to the guide plate and moved from place to place.

    • A machine for placing groups of containers, preferably bottles, into cases. Successive groups of bottles are moved horizontally to a first station where they are releasably suspended on escapement bars. The bottles are suspended at enlarged neck flanges adjacent their finishes. A cam mechanism moves the bars apart to release bottles allowing them to be moved vertically downward to a second station. The bottles are releasably received within one of two horizontally movable chutes at the second station. The chutes are also pivotable relative to one another so that the bottles may be inverted piror to being loaded into a case at a case packing station below. The two chutes are reciprocated horizontally relative to the first station so one chute may be unloaded into an awaiting case while the remaining chute is being loaded through operation of the escapement mechanism. Each chute may be inverted as the chutes are horizontally reciprocated. Case loading mechanisms at opposite sides of the first station include plungers that move vertically downward through the chutes to engage and push the bottles into cases at separate case packing stations.

    • Apparatus for automatically lifting containers, especially bottles, from moving cases. A series of closely adjacent, self-operating, grippers are carried along an endless path above a moving case or cases to be emptied. The grippers are laterally aligned with the columns of containers in a case and randomly grip the containers in an aligned row as they are guided into engagement. The grippers yield upwardly if obstructed as they are guided toward engagement with containers thereby permitting full depth cases to be emptied without coordinating a longitudinal relationship between any particular group of grippers and the case.
