    • A mineral mining installation composed of a scraper chain conveyor with a drive station, particularly an auxiliary drive station, at one end and a series of movable roof support chocks arranged along the goaf side of the conveyor. Three additional chocks, each having two telescopic props, are disposed around the end and side of the drive station. These chocks have roof caps and cantilevered roof bars which project over the drive station and shields which protect the drive station from the goaf and gallery zones. Two of the three chocks are disposed at the goaf side and gallery end of the station and these chocks are connected to the drive station with joints which permit vertical swinging but restrict horizontal swinging. The other of the three chocks is disposed at the goaf side of the chock at the end of the drive station and these chocks are interconnected by a shifting ram and a guide beam.

    • Apparatus for use in driving tunnels and having an advanceable shield formed by a plurality of elongate members disposed sideby-side in contact with the wall of the tunnel. The members are supported by two frames interconnected through piston and cylinder units. Each elongate member has sets of apertures with guide members therein defining guide surfaces which selectively receive spring-loaded slidable pins carried by the frames and respectively allocated to the members. The pins carried by one frame each have inclined surfaces at its outer end which engage on inclined guide surfaces in each associated aperture to permit the pin to retract automatically upon relative movement between the frame and the member having the aperture in question along the axis of the tunnel. The pins carried by the other frame are each manually rotatable about its axis through 180* to bring an abutment surface at its outer end into engagement with one of two opposite surfaces in an associated aperture extending parallel to the axis of the pin whereby the pin can selectively lock the frame to the member having the aperture in one or the other direction along the axis of the tunnel. Those pins carried by the other frame also each have an inclined surface engaging on one of two converging inclined surfaces in the associated aperture so that the pin can be retracted automatically when relative movement occurs between the frame and the member having the aperture in one direction or the other.

    • A mineral mining installation with a plough guided on a guide member at the mineral face side of a longwall conveyor. The guide member is part of a trough-like frame which receives the conveyor therein. A plurality of rods extend beneath the frame and conveyor. Each rod has a head slidably received between the floor of the working and a part of the guide member; the rods being used to vary the position of the guide member to control the cutting position of the plough. Each rod is pivotably connected to a lever which is in turn pivotably connected to a bracket at a goaf side wall of the frame. Each lever is connected to a shifting ram and the levers and brackets have bores for receiving locking pins. These pins can selectively clamp the levers whereby the rams can be used to shift the installation or displace the rods via the levers to effect the control of the plough.

    • Mineral mining installations provided with movable roof support assemblies at the stowage side of a conveyor with shifting rams connected between the conveyor and the assemblies. Each assembly has a number of extendible hydraulic props mounted between a floor sill and a roof cap. At the stowage side of the assembly there is provided a stowage shield composed of relatively pivotable components at least one of which has a U-shaped crosssection. The shield components are connected to a system of levers which control the movement of the components when the props are extended or retracted so as to continuously screen off the stowage zone from the assembly.

    • A mineral mining installation composed of a longwall conveyor having a ramped guide member at its mineral free side. The guide member locates on the face and acts as a housing for a traction member having interconnected elements which may be provided with cutters for cutting a groove at the floor region or at the floor and roof regions of the face. The elements, which are flexibly interconnected, have teeth which mesh with pinions driven by a number of hydraulic drive motors distributed along the length of the working. The motors can be housed in the guide member or disposed at the stowage side of the conveyor.

    • A mine roof frame with a roof girder to which a goaf screen or fender is pivotably suspended. A bracket assembly composed of a series of parallel shaped webs welded between two plates is attached to the roof girder. The lowermost plate carries a guide piece having a bore therein slidably receiving a spigot inclined in relation to the vertical and horizontal. The spigot has a support shoe which engages the fender to retain the latter in a working position. A shear pin extends through the guide piece and the spigot and the pin is designed to fracture when the fender is subjected to excessive loading to cause the spigot to slide inwardly of the guide piece to thereby allow the fender to pivot inwards to a near vertical position.

    • A mineral mining installation composed of a conveyor with a guide member for a plough on one side. The position of the guide member in relation to the floor of a mine working is controlled by means of beams connected to the goaf side of the conveyor. In one construction each beam is pivotably connected to the arms of a U-shaped bracket connected to the conveyor and a locking pin is insertable into various alignable bores in the beam and the arms of the bracket in order to secure the beam in various angular positions. In another construction each beam is composed of a channel member rigidly affixed to a leaf spring. The channel member is connected in the manner of a toggle linkage with a plate affixed to the goaf side of the conveyor and a piston and cylinder unit is connected between the channel member and the plate to effect a change in angular position.
