    • A self-venting balloon dilatation catheter and method for producing the same having a catheter tubing including a first lumen and a second lumen. An expandable balloon is positioned at a distal end of the catheter tubing. The first lumen is for a guide wire and the second lumen is in communication with the interior of the balloon. The balloon is expanded by filling the balloon with pressurized fluid via the second lumen. An air vent within the catheter tubing purges air from the balloon when the balloon is filled with fluid. Air purged via the air vent first moves substantially transverse to a longitudinal axis of the catheter tubing and then along the longitudinal axis to an opening at a distal end of the catheter tubing. A cylindrically marker band is secured around the distal end of the catheter tuving, and another cylindrical marker band is secured around the catheter tubing inside the expandable balloon.

    • Method and apparatus for making an image of a lumen and surrounding tissue in a body by inserting a transducer in the cavity and emitting ultrasound signals and collecting and processing echo signals to form an image, where the apparatus includes a signal processor arranged for performing the steps of and the method includes the steps of:a) obtaining echo signals from tissue at a given state of mechanical stress in a chosen direction;b) obtaining similar echo signals after a change of the mechanical stress;c) identifying the lumen-tissue boundary;d) comparing the echo signals to obtain a parameter indicative of tissue stiffness;e) performing similar steps for a number of directions;f) deriving and displaying the conventional echo image of the lumen and surrounding tissue from the echo signals of step a);g) superimposing in said image the tissue stiffness as a coded line along the lumen-tissue boundary.

    • A guide wire having pressure sensing capabilities for measuring the pressure of liquid in a vessel comprising a flexible elongate member and having proximal and distal extremities and having an outside diameter of 0.018" or less. The distal extremity of said flexible elongate member is adapted to be disposed in the liquid in said vessel. A housing is carried by the flexible elongate member and has a diameter substantially the same as the diameter of the flexible elongate member. The housing has a space therein with a pressure sensor mounted in the space in the housing. The pressure sensor has a diaphragm that is sensitive to changes of pressure in the liquid in the vessel. The diaphragm is rectangular in shape and is bordered by a rim surrounding the well. A backing plate is formed of an insulating material bonded to the crystal and serves to reinforce the rim of the crystal of semiconductor material. The backing plate has a cavity therein underlying the diaphragm and is in substantial registration with the diaphragm. The cavity serves to provide a pressure reference.
