    • A process and apparatus for treating fabric articles containing cellulosic material to provide control shrinkage and durable-press properties for the fabric includes a system for exposing the fabric to an aerosol mist that uniformly supplies a liquid cellulosic cross linking agent and moisture to the fabric at essentially room temperature. Optionally, a liquid catalyst can be incorporated in the aerosol mist, whereby each droplet of the aerosol mist contains liquid cellulosic cross linking agent, moisture and catalyst promoting cross linking agent. Following exposure of the fabric to the aerosol mist containing moisture, cross linking agent and catalyst, the fabric is cross linked at an elevated temperature and subsequently cleaned of cross linking chemicals. The fabric can also be treated using an aerosol mist containing other liquid chemical agents. Equipment for carrying out the process essentially includes a chamber having aerosol mist generating nozzles in communication with the interior of the chamber and appropriate supplies for compressed air and liquid chemicals in communication with the nozzles. Appropriate ventilating and heating systems are associated with the chamber.

    • An indexing system for a garment pressing machine includes a rotatable carriage having radial arms supporting circumferentially spaced pressing bucks moveable between dressing, pressing and unloading positions. A fluid drive arrangement includes a single linear reciprocating fluid actuator extendible and retractable under control of various solenoid valves that are controlled by a microprocessor which receives and processes signals from sensors indicating the degree of extension or retraction of the fluid actuator and the position of the rotatable carriage. A single cycle of retraction and extension of the fluid actuator results in rotation of the carriage by one position. Another cycle of retraction and extension of the actuator returns the drive system to a starting position ready to initiate another rotation of the carriage to its next position. The carriage can be cyclically indexed to move the bucks between their various operating positions every other retraction and extension cycle of the actuator. A special drive linkage between the actuator and carriage is used to enable a single linear actuator to cyclically rotate the carriage, and a latch is used to positively locate the carriage at each operative position.

    • An automatic shirt pressing apparatus includes at least a loading station, a pressing station and a movable support upon which a plurality of shirt receiving bucks are mounted for movement between the loading and pressing stations. A buck vacuum supply arrangement is associated with each of the bucks. A movable vacuum supply tube is arranged to successively be removably connected to the buck vacuum arrangement of each of the bucks when the buck located at the loading station, to travel with each of the bucks to a pressing station while remaining connected thereto and to be disconnected from the buck vacuum arrangement once a pressing operation is initiated. A method of pressing a shirt using such an automatic shirt pressing apparatus is also described. The method includes the steps of dressing a shirt on a respective buck located at a loading station, supplying a vacuum negative pressure to a vacuum arrangement of the respective buck located at the loading station to hold at least a front tail of the shirt against the respective buck, maintaining the vacuum negative pressure supplied to the vacuum arrangement of the respective buck continuously and uninterruptedly while moving the respective buck from the loading station to a pressing station, initiating pressing of the shirt against the respective buck, releasing vacuum negative pressure supplied to the vacuum arrangement of the respective buck once the pressing of the shirt has commenced, and returning the vacuum source to the loading station independently of the buck located in the pressing station.

    • A shirt pressing apparatus includes a buck upon which a shin can be loaded before transferring the buck into a cabinet for pressing and finishing of the shirt. Movable with the buck is a pair of rods which have attached thereto cuff clamps. In accordance with the invention, each of the cuff clamps includes a pair of longitudinally chamfered pinch bars which are mounted in a clamp housing and biased into engagement with each other. The pinch bars are preferably made of Teflon.TM. and are readily replaceable when worn. The cuff portions of the shirts to be pressed are loaded between the pinch bars of the cuff clamps from below while the rods are located adjacent the buck. Thereafter, the rods are extended away from the buck to place sleeves of the shirt in tension during the pressing and finishing operation. When the shirt is finished and comes out of the cabinet, the rods remain in their extended positions during unloading of the shirt.

    • A laundry machine includes a drum having an opening through which launderable items may be delivered into and withdrawn from and a hopper unit that defines an internal passage between first and second open ends thereof. The hopper unit is pivotally attached to the laundry machine between an in-use position in which the second open end of the hopper unit is aligned with the drum opening for loading the machine and a non-use position in which the hopper unit is positioned remote from the drum opening to permit unloading of the drum. The hopper unit includes a closure member, mounted within the internal passage, that is movable between an open position wherein launderable items can freely pass through the internal passage and a closed position wherein the closure member closes the internal passage. With this arrangement, the hopper unit remains in its in-use position during both loading and laundering stages of operation of the machine and functions to reduce cycle time, increase machine capacity, improve safety and enhance machine efficiency.

    • A drum type agitating and mixing machine for treating garments or fabric in liquid such as in washing or dyeing wherein a rotatable drum partially submerged in liquid along one side includes inwardly projecting hollow ribs arranged to contain air when the rib is outside the liquid in the machine. Each rib defines a pumping chamber having an inlet opening arrangement for liquid and an outlet arrangement for air trapped within the rib and the liquid that fills the rib so that liquid enters each rib from at one area of the rib and pumps air trapped within the rib out through an outlet arrangement which is axially spaced from the inlet. Flow of air out the outlet openings is slower than inflow of liquid into the chamber. Liquid contained within the rib drains therefrom through the outlet openings as each rib moves over the surface of liquid in the drum and is inverted. A one-way valve admits liquid into the rib chamber but does not let it flow in the reverse direction to ensure that liquid will drain from the outlet openings only. Pumping of air while the ribs are immersed causes air bubbles to be generated beneath the surface of the liquid in which the drum is rotated to promote intimate mixing of the liquid. The axial spacing of inlet and outlet transfers liquid axially within the drum.

    • An out-of-balance control for a laundry machine is described. The input to the control is a current signal which is proportionate to the current drawn by a motor which rotates a perforated drum into which fabric goods are loaded. When the drum is accelerated from a relatively low speed, employed to a washing cycle, to a somewhat higher, distribution speed, the input to the control is a "real time" signal which reflects variations in torque required to rotate the drum. The magnitude of these variations is proportional to load unbalance which can cause radial displacement of the drum, machine vibration and damage to its components. The real time signal is averaged. A differential amplifier then subtracts the "average" signal from the "real time" signal, providing an "unbalance torque" signal of alternating polarity. When the "unbalance torque" signal exceeds a given magnitude, reflecting the maximum permissible centrifugal force to be generated by load unbalance, an "unbalance control" signal is generated. The main control of the machine is responsive to this last signal to reduce the rotational speed of the drum.
