    • The present invention overcomes the problems that accompany the use of ramps to load and unload transducer carrying sliders in rigid magnetic disk data storage devices. The tracks in the region where the slider loads and unloads are read and the errors recorded following each slider loading operation. One technique is to track the error increase and identify imminent device failure when the rate of error increase during a given number of the most recent slider load cycles exceeds a threshold value. In another mode, a dedicated sequence of tracks is recorded at an increased linear density to assure that read errors occur to enable a more effective comparative evaluation. This makes possible a two stage evaluation, a first threshold number of errors indicative of degrading performance which initiates lower actuator velocity to inhibit further degradation and a second threshold error quantity that indicates imminent catastrophic failure and triggers a warning to the system user. To make the analysis more meaningful, certain errors may be ignored, such as simpler errors or the full number of errors in a cluster that may be the result of a single event.

    • A disk for a disk drive data storage device contains embedded track identifying fields which identify a track within a range of tracks, the range being less than the full range of tracks on the disk surface. The full identity of a track during a track seek operation is determined by iteratively assuming a track identity and estimating acceleration of the transducer based on the assumed track identity, until a track identity is found for which estimated acceleration meets some pre-determined threshold. Preferably, embedded servo fields are recorded at angularly spaced intervals on the disk surface, and every Nth servo field contains a Gray code full track identifier, while all servo fields in between contain abbreviated Gray code fields which identify a track within a range of tracks.

    • A recording disk contains at least two types of servo sector format, including a first type having a relatively larger track identifying field containing the track number, and a second type having an abbreviated track identifying field identifying a track within a range of tracks, the range being less than the full range of tracks on the disk surface. Preferably, Gray code encodings are used, the first type of track field contains sufficient Gray code bits to identify the ful track number, every Nth servo sector is of the first type, and all servo sectors in between are of the second type, N being at least 2. As a result, the disk area required for track identification is reduced, and the additional disk space available can be used to expand the PES field.

    • A bar coded magnetic recording pattern uniquely identifying the disk of a disk drive is disposed, at the time the disk is single disk tested and accepted, in a reserved area that is not used for data recording by the disk drive assembly. The identifying recording is disposed in a reserved region that is accessible by the magnetic transducer of the disk drive. The identifying recording may be read to determine the orientation of the disk in the disk drive and may be read to positively identify the disk to permit repair, recall or data transfer from specifically identified disks without shut down and/or disassembly of the disk drives incorporating the designated disks.

    • An apparatus and method for estimating one or more pole frequencies of an amplifier circuit, such as a readback signal amplifier circuit implemented in an arm electronics module of a data storage system, are disclosed. A bias signal that biases the read transducer is modulated at first and second modulation frequencies while a readback signal is obtained from a data storage medium using the read transducer. The readback signal is communicated to the amplifier, and an output signal of the amplifier circuit is measured at the respective first and second modulation frequencies. The amplifier pole frequency is determined by computing a square impedance measurement ratio using square magnitudes of the bias signal and the amplifier output signal respectively measured at the first and second modulation frequencies.

    • A method and apparatus for optimizing the seek/settle performance of a storage device. The present invention measures the seek/settle performance for each individual head and selects the heads with the best seek/settle performance, i.e., access performance. The invention includes a processor for calculating velocity deviations for each of the plurality of heads to determine a set of suitable seek heads from the plurality of heads, a head selection circuit for switching from a current head to a preferred head from the set of suitable seek heads and an actuator controller for seeking with the preferred head to a virtual track corresponding to a target track. The processor calculates a preferred/target runout difference for smoothing the settle of the preferred head and the head selection circuit switches from the preferred head to a target head aligned with the target track. The preferred/target runout difference comprises the differences between the runout for the preferred head and the target head for N sectors and the preferred/target runout difference is provided to the actuator controller upon calculation by the processor. The head selection circuit switches from the preferred head to a target head aligned with the target track at a predetermined period before the target head is positioned at the target track. The preferred head is a randomly selected head from the set of suitable seek heads. The head selection circuit switches from the preferred head to a target head aligned with the target track for read operations.

    • Embodiments of systems, methods and article of manufacture provide for readback signal detection and analysis. One embodiment provides an in-situ system to detect envelope traces of a readback signal. Using the envelope data, the presence of undesirable activity and/or storage medium surface conditions may be determined. For example, head modulation may be determined. Upon detection of a modulation event in a sector or a track, the compromised data may be recovered using a signal processing system. Another embodiment provides for detection of a thermal signal component in a readback signal. The thermal signal is processed for surface information indicative of the surface condition. Information indicating a defect may then be used to avoid storage areas having the defects.
