    • A slider having leading and trailing edges is configured to fly on an airbearing adjacent a data storage disk rotating from the leading edge to the trailing edge. Read and write heads are mounted on the slider proximate the trailing edge. An auxiliary thermal sensor is mounted on the slider, but preferably nearer the leading edge. Forward placement of the sensor allows it to sense mechanical defects before they reach the heads, thereby permitting a write inhibit operation, for example. The sensor may also be used to detect airbearing modulation. Appropriate action may be taken when unacceptable airbearing modulation is detected, such as notifying the user and/or scrubbing the slider. The sensor is preferably wider than the heads. This allows, for example, an in-situ glide test to be performed faster using the sensor. An arm electronics module is preferably configured to permit concurrent operation of the sensor and heads.

    • A disk for a disk drive data storage device contains embedded track identifying fields which identify a track within a range of tracks, the range being less than the full range of tracks on the disk surface. The full identity of a track during a track seek operation is determined by iteratively assuming a track identity and estimating acceleration of the transducer based on the assumed track identity, until a track identity is found for which estimated acceleration meets some pre-determined threshold. Preferably, embedded servo fields are recorded at angularly spaced intervals on the disk surface, and every Nth servo field contains a Gray code full track identifier, while all servo fields in between contain abbreviated Gray code fields which identify a track within a range of tracks.

    • A recording disk contains at least two types of servo sector format, including a first type having a relatively larger track identifying field containing the track number, and a second type having an abbreviated track identifying field identifying a track within a range of tracks, the range being less than the full range of tracks on the disk surface. Preferably, Gray code encodings are used, the first type of track field contains sufficient Gray code bits to identify the ful track number, every Nth servo sector is of the first type, and all servo sectors in between are of the second type, N being at least 2. As a result, the disk area required for track identification is reduced, and the additional disk space available can be used to expand the PES field.

    • A bar coded magnetic recording pattern uniquely identifying the disk of a disk drive is disposed, at the time the disk is single disk tested and accepted, in a reserved area that is not used for data recording by the disk drive assembly. The identifying recording is disposed in a reserved region that is accessible by the magnetic transducer of the disk drive. The identifying recording may be read to determine the orientation of the disk in the disk drive and may be read to positively identify the disk to permit repair, recall or data transfer from specifically identified disks without shut down and/or disassembly of the disk drives incorporating the designated disks.

    • An apparatus and method for estimating one or more pole frequencies of an amplifier circuit, such as a readback signal amplifier circuit implemented in an arm electronics module of a data storage system, are disclosed. A bias signal that biases the read transducer is modulated at first and second modulation frequencies while a readback signal is obtained from a data storage medium using the read transducer. The readback signal is communicated to the amplifier, and an output signal of the amplifier circuit is measured at the respective first and second modulation frequencies. The amplifier pole frequency is determined by computing a square impedance measurement ratio using square magnitudes of the bias signal and the amplifier output signal respectively measured at the first and second modulation frequencies.

    • A method and apparatus for optimizing the seek/settle performance of a storage device. The present invention measures the seek/settle performance for each individual head and selects the heads with the best seek/settle performance, i.e., access performance. The invention includes a processor for calculating velocity deviations for each of the plurality of heads to determine a set of suitable seek heads from the plurality of heads, a head selection circuit for switching from a current head to a preferred head from the set of suitable seek heads and an actuator controller for seeking with the preferred head to a virtual track corresponding to a target track. The processor calculates a preferred/target runout difference for smoothing the settle of the preferred head and the head selection circuit switches from the preferred head to a target head aligned with the target track. The preferred/target runout difference comprises the differences between the runout for the preferred head and the target head for N sectors and the preferred/target runout difference is provided to the actuator controller upon calculation by the processor. The head selection circuit switches from the preferred head to a target head aligned with the target track at a predetermined period before the target head is positioned at the target track. The preferred head is a randomly selected head from the set of suitable seek heads. The head selection circuit switches from the preferred head to a target head aligned with the target track for read operations.

    • A magnetic disk drive includes redundant data written at a plurality of out of phase angular locations to reduce the latency and enhance performance during a read operation. The loss of recording capacity is reduced by increasing the data density to achieve the same soft error rate standard required for single recording. Dual recording also allows different recording codes to be used at the duplicated locations to thereby have the more highly stressed code words occur at different locations in the data to further reduce the possibility of an error. The redundant recording can be used in one portion of the media and normal recording used in another media portion to enable selection of the recording technique in accordance with the type of data being stored. The size of the normal and redundant recording portions can be controlled by the format operation and the user of the disk drive can intervene to designate the size of the redundant and normal media recording portions effected during the format operation.
