    • Embodiments related to automatically adjusting wireless network settings based upon utilization of a wireless network link by applications are disclosed. For example, one disclosed embodiment provides a method of adjusting a wireless networking setting for a wireless network link. The method includes monitoring data flow through a network interface controller to collect, for each of one or more applications running on the computing device and communicating over the wireless network link, flow performance data comprising information regarding an amount of data flow arising from the application. The method also includes monitoring link data comprising information regarding data being sent and received over the wireless network link, and based upon the flow performance data and the link data, controlling a network interface controller to adjust the wireless networking parameter to change a configuration of the network link.

    • A framework capable of providing transparent handling of network traffic in close proximity networks such as home networks is provided. A single virtual network interface is exposed to users/applications on connected devices. A virtual network interface manager determines available physical network interfaces and switches to a different physical network interface or a different configuration on the same physical network interface in a transparent manner to the communicating application(s). This enables the framework to optimize network communications for the communicating applications, devices, and users based on predefined criteria, application requirements such as different data throughput, or changing environment conditions such as interference. Network communication operations are also simplified for users since they are no longer required to have the necessary knowledge for configuring physical network interfaces manually in response to changing conditions.

    • A method to predict visual quality of a DCT (discrete cosine transform) based compressed image or video stream without referring to its source. When applied to an MPEG video stream, the method is based on (1) an estimation of quantization errors using MPEG quantization scales and statistics of the inverse quantized DCT coefficients, (2) a blind estimation of the 8×8 and 16×16 blocking effect, and (3) an adaptive combination of the quantization error estimation and the blocking effect estimation using the MPEG motion vector information. The method may be used in many applications, such as network video servers, switches and multiplexers for automatic quality monitoring and control of video services, video encoders, decoders, transcoders, and statistical multiplexers for picture quality optimization.
