    • A method for identifying a surface in which a plurality of trace material is used to establish a database in which a unique combination of trace materials is assigned to a unique source. A composition is formulated containing the unique combination together with an indicator material and a solvent system, the solvent system including a solvent which is volatile under conditions of application. This composition is applied to a surface and the solvent permitted to evaporate, after which the composition is detected on the basis of the indicator material and each of the plurality of trace materials is identified. The unique source can then be determined from the database.

    • A marker system for applying to surfaces of items, articles, goods, vehicles and/or premises, said marker system comprising: a marker comprising a temperature resilient medium having a predefined carbonisation temperature capable of securing the marker system onto a surface; wherein the medium contains an inorganic matrix having a predefined fusing point lower than the predefined carbonisation temperature of the medium; such that when the marker system is subjected to temperatures above the predefined carbonisation temperature of the medium, the inorganic matrix fuses to the marker to form an adhesive protective layer thereby securing the marker onto said surface. A composition comprising the marker system. An item, an article, a good, a vehicle and/or premises comprising a surface impregnated with the marker system.

    • A method of producing batches of micro particles includes affixing a substrate sheet to a support and cutting the substrate sheet with a laser device to define a plurality of micro particles. Before, after or during the cutting of the substrate sheet, the region of the substrate sheet defining each micro particle is marked with a code or other identifying marking using a laser device. The code or other identifying marking is unique to the particular batch of micro particles to uniquely identify that batch. The micro particles are removed from the support by a solvent. Preferably, a single laser device is used for cutting the substrate sheet and marking the micro particles. Alternatively, separate laser devices may be used for cutting the substrate sheet and marking the micro particles.
