    • A serial printer with a dot print head which prints print data produced in accordance with a page describing language. In this serial printer, it is judged whether or not character data is included in the print data and, if included, whether or not character data printable by the dot print head in a single scanning stroke exists in the character data previously judged, whereby the character data non-printable in a single scanning stroke of the head is printed similarly to graphic data included in the print data after being converted into image data, and the character data printable in a single scanning stroke of the head is printed independently of graphic data. Consequently, the character data can be printed without displacement of dots according to print ability of the dot print head and excellent print quality of the characters can be obtained.

    • A drive control system for controlling a drive motor in response to external command signals. The system comprises a first control arrangement for obtaining numerical values corresponding to amounts of successive intermittent operations of the drive motor responsive to respective external command signals, summing the obtained numerical values, and subtracting from a current sum of the numerical values a numerical value corresponding to a non-operation time period during which the drive motor is held at rest between the successive intermittent operations. The system further comprises a second control arrangement for inhibiting the operation of the drive motor responsive to the next command signal, for a length of time corresponding to the current sum after the drive motor has completed each of the intermittent operations, whereby the temperature of the drive motor is kept below an upper limit.

    • A printing apparatus having a first and a second printing assembly supported on a carrier which reciprocates along a line of printing defined on a platen. The first printing assembly has type elements adapted to be abuttable on the platen for printing characters on a sheet of paper supported on the platen, along the line of printing. The second printing assembly is adapted to print the characters with a matrix of dots. The first and second printing assemblies are so disposed that their print points are spaced from each other along the surface of the platen. The apparatus comprises first and second control units for controlling the operations of the first and second printing assemblies, respectively, according to input printing data. The apparatus further comprises a selector device which selects one of the first and second control units according to information included in the input printing data, so that the character represented by the character data of the printing data is printed by the corresponding one of the first and second printing assemblies.

    • A paper feeding apparatus in a printer, wherein a sheet of paper placed on a rotary support member is fed by a predetermined distance through a corresponding angle of rotation of a drive motor which is energized by a drive circuit under control of a control device which applies a control signal to the drive circuit to give a predetermined angle of rotation to the drive motor and thereby effect a paper feeding cycle each time the control signal is applied. The control device includes control means for adapting the control signal so as to progressively increase the operating speed of the drive motor up to a predetermined level when the application of the control signal takes place more than a predetermined time interval after termination of the previous paper feeding cycle. When the application of the control signal takes place within the predetermined time interval, the control means adapts the control signal so as to cause the drive motor to operate at a constant speed equal to the predetermined level throughout the predetermined angle of rotation thereof.

    • A paper edge detecting device for a printing apparatus in which a paper margin of a print paper can be detected with high accuracy. A mark printing process is executed upon power-on of a printer, so that a carriage is displaced from an original position H0 to a position corresponding to a set pulse number H.sub.P and stopped at that position to print on the print paper a linear mark M aligned in a direction perpendicular to a displacement direction of the carriage. Thereafter, a mark detection process is executed, and the carriage is displaced from the original position H0 until the mark M is detected by the photosensor. Subsequently, a correction amount generating process is executed to calculate a correction value .alpha. on the basis of the set pulse number H.sub.P and the count value C.sub.P when the mark M is detected by the photosensor.
