    • The output of a knock sensor for detecting a knock signal of an engine is applied to a bandpass filter for bandpassing only the knock signal. The output of the bandpass filter is applied to an automatic gain control circuit for variably controlling the gain of the knock signal. The output of the automatic gain control circuit is applied to an averaging circuit via a maximum clamp circuit. A comparator supplies an output to an integration circuit of the next stage when the output of the bandpass filter becomes greater than that of the averaging circuit. An ignition control device for controlling the spark timing of an ignition coil energizes the ignition coil by the output from a pick-up coil and that of the integration circuit and delivers a feedback signal to the integration circuit.

The slope of the output voltage waveform of the O.sub.2 sensor is computed from the successively sampled values.     • A system and method for controlling an ignition timing for an internal combustion engine. In the ignition timing control system and method, with a retardation angle correction amount stored as a learning value according to an engine operating region, a newly learned learning value is used as the retardation angle correction amount so that an optimum retardation angle correction amount can be provided regardless of an individual difference in engine performance and of an operating environment. Consequently, an effective suppression of occurrence of engine knocking can be achieved and engine performance and fuel economy can be improved. In addition, since the updating of the learning value is inhibited only when an engine revolutional speed is increased, an opportunity of updating the learning value is increased so that the learning value can always be set at optimum.

    • An angle of an ignition timing for a specific cylinder is gradually advanced. A comparison is made between the previous output of a knock detection circuit for the cylinder having its angle advanced and the present output thereof by a comparator. The comparator evaluates an occurrence of a knock when an output signal therefrom changes drastically. The signal from the comparator rewrites the knock evaluation reference value in each cylinder written in the memory. When an output from the knock sensor is larger than that of the memory, an ignition timing retard angle signal is output from the comparator. As a result, the apparatus of the present invention can control ignition timing without errors due to the deterioration with age or manufacturing errors, as it can correct knocking detection sensibility of the apparatus.
