    • An apparatus to drive a blade on which an objective lens is mounted including a first electromagnetic unit to generate a first electromagnetic force and a second electromagnetic unit to generate a second electromagnetic force such that when the first and second magnitudes are the same, the blade is driven in a focus direction, and when the magnitudes are different, the blade is driven in a tilt direction. Accordingly, a tilt error can be actively controlled so that a laser beam is incident on a disk in a precise direction therefore improving the qualities of recording and reproducing data. In addition, tilt control is performed by using a focus adjustment mechanism so that an additional mechanism to control tilt is not required. As a result, the size and weight of the apparatus to drive the objective lens of the optical pickup are reduced.

    • An objective lens driving apparatus used with an optical pickup includes a base, a holder provided on the base, a blade on which an objective lens is mounted, an elastic support body elastically supporting the blade and which is capable of moving with respect to the holder, a pair of magnetic members installed on the base to face each other, and a coil assembly including a focus coil, a tracking coil, and a tilt coil, the coil assembly being installed at the blade so as to be disposed between the magnetic members. Thus, coils needed to change the position of an objective lens are incorporated into a single coil assembly and are arranged between a pair of magnets, and an installation space is small so that the apparatus can be made compact.

    • An objective lens driving apparatus for an optical pickup includes a blade on which an objective lens can be mounted, a plurality of elastic support members supporting the blade and capable of elastically moving with respect to the blade, and a servo mechanism driving the blade up and down, left and right, and in a rotational direction. The elastic support members are grouped into pairs arranged to face each other with respect to a center of rotation of the blade, and distances between the elastic support members in the respective pairs are substantially identical. By lessening the difference in the amount of deformation between the elastic support members supporting the blade during tilt control, the elastic support members are less likely to move in undesired directions when vibration is applied.

    • An actuator of a disc drive having a shock damping device includes an electro-magnet disposed on a cover of the disc drive, a magnetic material disposed on a load beam of the actuator, opposite to the electro-magnet, and a driving control portion controlling a driving of the electro-magnet by detecting an vibration of the load beam towards and away from an optical disc that is caused by an external shock. When the load beam is vibrated by the external vibration or shock to the disc drive, electricity is supplied to the electro-magnet, securing the load beam to the cover until the vibration ceases. Accordingly, even when there is external vibration or shock applied to the disc drive, possible damage to the disc or the actuator can be minimized or prevented.
