    • An automatic transmission locking mechanism including a detent lever rotatively interlocked with a manual shift lever and provided with notches corresponding to the shift positions, respectively, of the manual shift lever for receiving the detent of a detent spring, a rod adapted to be advanced or retracted by the detent lever, a parking gear fixed to the output shaft of the automatic transmission, a pawl having a detent to be engaged with the parking gear in locking the parking gear, a cam slidably mounted on the rod and adapted to push the pawl for turning when the rod is advanced in shifting the manual shift lever to the parking position, a bracket on which the cam runs upward and a spring for releasing the pawl from the parking gear and for retaining the pawl at the released position. A contact surface formed in the free end of the pawl for engagement with the cam is formed so as to reduce the detrimental slip between the cam and the contact surface to the least possible degree.

    • An automatic transmission includes a fluid torque converter and a first and a second gear transmission mechanism, each of which has two coaxial drive members--a power input member and a power output member--and is selectable to any one of several speed ratios. Rotational power is output from the fluid torque converter to the first gear transmission mechanism. The torque converter, and the first gear transmission mechanism including the power input and power output members thereof, are all coaxial on a first axis. A through lay shaft extends along a second axis parallel to the first axis, passing through the second gear transmission mechanism so as to support it, and is rotationally coupled to the power input member of the second gear transmission mechanism. A gear wheel rotationally coupled to the power output member of the first gear transmission mechanism transfers rotational power to a gear wheel meshed with it and fixed to the through lay shaft, which transfers this rotational power to the power input member of the second gear transmission mechanism. A power output gear wheel is rotatably supported by the through lay shaft and is rotationally coupled to the power output member of the second gear transmission mechanism.

    • A gear transmission unit for an automatic transmission comprises: a single pinion type first planetary gear unit including a first sun gear, a first ring gear arranged concentrically with the first sun gear, and a first carrier retaining a pinion meshing with both the sun gear and the ring gear; a single pinion type second planetary gear unit including a second sun gear, a second ring gear arranged concentrically with the second sun gear and connected to the first carrier, and a second carrier retaining a pinion meshing with both the second sun gear and the second ring gear and connected to the first ring gear; and a double pinion type third planetary gear unit including a third sun gear connected to the first sun gear, a third ring gear arranged concentrically with the third sun gear, and a third carrier retaining both one pinion meshing with the third sun gear and another pinion meshing with the one pinion and the third ring gear. The first carrier is connected to the third ring gear. An output element is connected to at least either the first carrier or the third ring gear; and a brake fixes the third carrier.

    • A planetary gear transmission having a sun gear and a ring gear, planetary gears engaging the sun and ring gears, a carrier having a radial flange and carrier pins fixed to the flange to rotatably support the planetary gears, and a first and a second gear rotatable with the carrier and engaging each other. The first gear has an external toothed portion located on one of opposite sides of the flange as seen in the axial direction, while the planetary gear are located on the other side of the flange. At least one lubricant passage is formed so as to extend through the flange. Each passage communicates with the corresponding planetary gears and has an open end open in one of the opposite surfaces on the side of the external toothed portion of the first gear. An annular lubricant receiver is disposed coaxially with the carrier, for receiving a lubricant which is fed from a meshing point of the first and second gears in the axial direction from the first gear toward the planetary gears. The receiver is adapted to direct the lubricant to the open end of each lubricant passage, for lubricating the corresponding planetary gear.
